Truckin, is the old seed competition still cooking? Are you sticking with defining an old seed as 11+ years old? Sounds good to me just got some '09 seeds in the mail though so I cant help myself I gotta ask. Anyhow... If up for it lets beat this horse some more. To be clear on the rules... it would be open to 11+ year old seeds? Here is how I figure age:
2018 one year old
2017 two
16 three
15 four
14 five
13 six
12 seven
11 8
10 9
9... 10
'08... 11 years old

I would think 2018 seeds would be new. They have never been grown. 2017 would be one year old. Don't really care but that's how I see it

“Glenomkins,
I really don’t understand the angle behind arguing for seeds more recent than 10 years old to be included in an “Old Seed Contest”. I’m not going to engage in a debate for sport over that point. Half the challenge is going to be germinating these things. If you’re trying to- in some obtuse way- make the argument that we need to raise the minimum age of the seed to 15 years, or else include specifically the 1421.5 Stelts and 1676.5 Daletas, then just say it directly. I’m not trying to be a jerk about this, but you’re really beating a dead horse at this point and I seriously can’t figure out how a seed from 2011 could be considered an old seed in 2019.

As I have said before, I am on board with a 15 year minimum, but I am about the level of participation at that point. Most growers do not have 15+ year old pumpkin seeds. I have quite a few and will list them as available for free to anyone who joins the contest. I will post the list this weekend and we will go with a 15 year minimum age. Cutoff will be seed year 2003.

Am I a pest? Lol I think I know the answer. But really I did not know it was 2003. I still don't get how that's a fifteen year minimum. In my mind that's a 16 year minimum. Well, I don't get why these petty arguments blow up. It can't all be my fault, but yeah I'll take some blame.

Interesting view ag teacher. That's legit, although it confuses me.

Same here on the old seeds. If someone doesn’t have one 25 years old email me and I’ll send you one.

well, you get the idea---go with the SIMPLE math
example after the 'or:', lol, lol, lol.
true, we need an 'Edit' button, and even then, an 'Are You Sure?', just for me.

These contest replies reminds of the old joke about a horse designed by committee. If Truckin is running the contest then it is his rules that apply. Pretty simple.

Everyone likes to herd sheep no one likes to herd cats. I'll try to get an 03 or prior seed into my late lineup. See what pops & run a comparison.
I dont have to design the whole rocket just have to know what kind of fuel to put in. Thanks.

Check out our California auctions for seeds from 02 & 03 in the seed/raffle auction section. I think they qualify as +15 years old. Just trying to raise $ for our club!

When I look at the seeds from 2009 there are definitely some more interesting seeds to plant than 2008 in my opinion. But 2007 and older there are many old seeds out there worth a try.
I am excited to see how an old seed can compare with today growing methods; I wish we had bigger prize money to encourage more participation.
I will put $40 in for two entries
I will start in about a week with 200 or so old seeds so there is a chance I get more than a couple to germinate
How many entries do we have? Any volunteers besides me to be the fiduciary institution? I can do it, just seems maybe an organization could adopt this to make it more official

I plenty of olds seeds if anyone is interested. I just cleaned old my seed cabinet, some from late 90's most starting in 2000 and forward club seeds from New England, Pacific NW and Canada. Let me know your wish list and I will look for them Free if you are going to try to sprout/ grow them in 2019. Krusdan@aol.com

Boy, would I love to get in on this grow. But I'm not growing this year. I have seeds from the the mid 80's, and a lot of seeds in between.

Nic, I know the old blood has some very cool seeds from back in the day to give a shot. I did this in 2017 and burned about 300 old seeds but did manage to get a 940 Mombert 98 and an 846 Richart from 95. The Mombert would not set fruit but got 3 fruit off the 846 to maturity, two of which had some size at 646.5 and 446 pounds. The 646.5 was grown out this past year and produced nice beautiful pumpkins. Anyway, where I was going with this, I know you guys keep track of genetics more than I do now, so is there a direction we want to try and take with this? Revive the Mombert Line? Knauss? Ciliberto? or even made a last ditch effort to save an old squash line? I may not cough up a full blown competition site, but could run a few 20 x 20' sites. It was cool, and to see that old 846 standing up to the heat where the new seeds were wilting, but being the first to get powdery mildew was interesting. Ya I think I will be in on this 'competition'

I had to take a break for a little while- the prorated prize structure and pedigree based qualifiers were too much for me lol.

Brett, I worked with Stellpflug seeds a couple years ago, the 570* Stellpflug to be exact. I ended up getting YVD, but with a lot of work, managed to save a side vine and got a squash selfed. Only 131#, but saved the genetics. Seeds were all immature, but I managed to sprout one, grew that to 187#. So I would say I have the Stellpflug squash line preserved for now. I haven't grown the 187, so not sure how it will produce. I was thinking about sibbing it with another 187#. But I'm not growing this year again.
