I am the bum on the street corner asking as much as I do... I dont want to use glyphosate this year. I also wont want to till it in. Is mowing ok, or weedwhacking? If the plant gets chopped will that kill it so that by summer it will dry out or will it just send up more and more stalks/ remain green? Solarizing it would also be an option for me. Or... to not plant any. Thanks for help my pumpkin friends! You guys are my brains...

Brandon, I amended and till in Rye ahead of growing vines. The rye doesn't usually come back. I do mow if needed before till.

Organic no till farmers often use rye as part of a permanent mulch. They let the rye grow up and then just as it starts to go to seed they roll it with a special roller. That flattens the rye and also crushes the stems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuvSbmumgcI

If you don’t want to rototill, then your options are limited. We double dug and turned over our rye cover crop by hand for several years.
Works great in a smaller area, but is a lot of work..
