I have been trying to figure out what the Boron level should be in my garden. I have read where 5ppm can be toxic to plants. Early on growers were going for 2ppm but Ian is far above this level and having great results. His soil tests show levels that are nearly 4ppm. I am thinking that 4ppm is a reasonable target and wonder if anyone has strong feelings otherwise?

Boron is tricky for a couple reasons...the gap between deficiency and toxicity is very narrow and when you couple that with how little product is necessary ( 2 parts in a million), hitting the sweet spot is very challenging.

Secondly, boron, like nitrogen, is what we call a "mobile" nutrient...meaning that it flushes out of the soil with water. But you will also get some boron back as your organic matter decomposes and releases it for plant use.

I recommend 2-4ppm in the soil fertility guide. the key to success here is even application/incorporation. you gotta find a way to apply the product evenly, otherwise you'll end up with hot spots and cold spots.

1lb of Borax per 1000sq ft will provide 2ppm.

Joe, I just re-read your guide to interpreting soil tests and managing fertility and for anyone who does have it, hopefully you have more for sale.

I took your advice and incorporated the Borax with 0-0-50 and the Borax really seemed to stick to, and adhere to the granules. Sure made it a lot easier to spread...thanks.

There is also the factor variability between crops in terms of plant sensitivity to boron.

I meant to say, There is also the factor of variability between crops, in terms of plant sensitivity to boron.
