As long as she deducts any prize money earned, grower may earn a reprieve.....

I hope my better half doesn't see that... She already singles out pumpkin related purchases and tags them as "hobbies" on our Mint account...

Its ok to spend a lot on pumpkins as long as you spend 10 x more on her.

How are you going to work a BES into the liabilities section of the balance sheet?

My CFO and growing partner understands that the expenditures must be amortized over 20 years, since some years will require more “infrastructure costs” and other years will include “equipment related costs”

10 times more...not happening!!

In our wedding vows I made Jodi agree that she would never question pumpkin or fishing expenses, and that I would never question her shoe or purse purchases. I just say nice shoes or purse.

Now that I am house shopping, I am finding the biggest expense for giant growing is land cost in major metropolitan area. Equivalent houses with 1/2 acre of land is about $40,000+ more than 1/4 acre. It is less cost with more land, if I want to drive an hour to work. How am I going to figure the initial garden cost into the spreadsheet? Everyone has a budget..the challenge is to get the most return, whether it is enjoyment or prizes from that budget.

I wish I could show you the face I made when I saw the title of the post... somehow... just somehow... I knew what it was already about.

Hope this doesn't get me kicked out of the community. It's really to start a baseline for myself. I feel I'm a good grower with the potential to be a great grower. In order for me to get there though, I need to be more efficient, and that starts with a better understanding of everything involved.

We are going to try to work out the differences between investments for the hobby (irrigation lines, hoop houses, etc.) versus bare necessities to get one to the scale (fertilizer, water, etc.)

I plan to do 3 plants at 900 sqft each this year if you wish to follow the numbers. It's meant to be fun, so please take it that way. I'm sorry if any of you get in trouble over this.

Funny that you asked about the water bill. Last year is the first since I've lived here that I didn't get a letter from the water company... but mostly because I wasn't home all summer =p

So, we have a baseline for the house water usage for all of 2018 with no gardening going on. We will calculate the drip tape x time running to get a base figure and then compare against the same months on the water bill from 2018 in order to get an accurate idea of how much water was used and what the cost is.

Electricity you ask? Yes, I have to figure that out as well with soil cables and fans and such.

In addition, I will try my best to keep track of everything that I saved by buying things on sale, and utilizing free materials when possible. It's not just about what is spent, but where the money goes and where it can be spent better if you have a limited budget for growing.

Juuuuust to be clear here... this experiment is for scientific purposes only. Anyone who opposes the study hates science and thinks dinosaurs are fake =p

Dustin - your wife work in accounting?

This is actually an interesting thing to do. I often think about how much money I've "saved" by getting supplies on deep discount at the end of the season, or free growing supplies from company reps that I meet at trade shows.
