Has anyone had more trouble with aborts on a heavy genetics plant? I have had some healthy plants that did not want to set a kin and the main difference that I can think of is the genetics were for high % heavy. Anyone else have an issue with aborts and if so was it on a light or hvy genetics plant?

I grew a 1533 criss, its a 2145 X 2145,, I did start late but still a very nice looking plant, & hottest july on record, never under 100*,, But very well shaded, intire patch & (mister sprinklers) on all sides of patch,, every pumpkin aborted,, at like 8' 12' 15'17' 21'25',, many pumpkins looked great but not one would set! Never had this happen before !!!

My 2150 Skinner aborted 4 times. I pulled the plant after the last one.

I only ever had one plant that would abort every pumpkin, and even though it was one that had heavy genetics, I don't blame that. I got the nitrogen way too high. The plant had massive vine growth and huge, dark green leaves. I got desperate and let everything pollinate, mains and secondaries, and they all aborted at softball size. I learned my lesson and it never happened again.

Had a 1725 Harp that would abort/split (at baseball size) every pumpkin we tried to pollinate on it, but I think it was also a nitrogen issue. Big leaves, thick boner vines that grew out so heavy that they would fall over & break. We stopped using manures after that. We stick to a good quality compost now.

I agree both my Paton plants had huge leaves and aggressive vine growth out of 4 plants I got one fruit to take I blame it on an ammonium sulfate miscalculation and a very hot June

Here are my thoughts, When a plant aborts every fruit set, I think this is a genetic issue. All my plants get the same treatment, so I don't think it has to do with fertilizer. I am mostly an orange grower and just off the top of my head I have had four orange ones over the years that were incapable of setting or growing fruit to maturity. I don't ever remember a big and ugly one being unable to set or grow a fruit to maturity. (I have probably grown a dozen or more big and ugly)
In my experience I usually can eventually get a fruit to set but the fruit will stop growing by about 20 days or so. This year it was my 716 Wolf would not set and grow a fruit, I got a few pollinations to take but none stuck and grew. The 1290 Poirier did that for me too. I know other growers had problems with the 1290 as well. It is a crap shoot. Some growers had success with the 1290 and grew it to completion. Some seeds come with more risks than others.

We could considering I grow just south of h*ll. It's super hot and super humid here. I do not run misters or shady cloth but I do overhead water. With that said when I changed my watering to 2-3 pm from 8am it helps cool the plant down and has reduced aborts. The humidy and yvd still play a huge roll now in getting something to the scale. I think heat, over fertilizing, and any plant stress cause most aborts

Thanks.
Heavy genetics is clearly not the only factor. In my patches it seems to be a factor... but if the plant doesnt make a pumpkin at all then who knows. . . I just think the sets with high cell density are the ones that get dumped if something is wrong. For me calcium and ph is the most likely reason. I think this could be either/both soil and water related. An easy fix, I think.

The 2269 patton was my most beautiful vigoris plant ive ever grown. Very healthy, i tried many times to get one on to no avail. I finally got one on a sidevine in mid september. It just got a cople hundred lbs. At the end of the year it was the only with no disease thzt i could see. Its too much work to gamble on my other 2269 with no results
