Has anybody ever used pre emergent in there patch. There are some that are labeled for pumpkins. Would it affect secondary roots?

Most growers do not use pre-emergence herbicides just because of fear of root damage. The most common one labeled for pumpkins is Preen, the same chemical as Treflan. Before I started growing giants, I used it to control foxtail in my tomatoes, beans and jack-o-lantern pumpkins. It did a great job on grassy weeds, but the broadleaf weeds were not stopped. The galinsoga seemed to think it was a fertilizer and just went wild. I haven't used it since.

We use the herbicide command on our field pumpkins at the farm. It works Awesome. I haven't used it on my Atlantic Giants.

I use Reflex/Dual on my Atlantic giants and my five plus acres of jack-o-lantern and specialty pumpkins. I have a restricted use applicators license but am not sure if either of those two fit under restricted use chemicals.

I grew the 649.5 in a patch sprayed with Strategy this year. Things I noticed: The plant was at an absolute standstill for several weeks after transplant. Secondary's did not root as vigorously, which limited my overall plants growth, It was difficulty to fill in the 750sqf. The good thing is I did have very little weeds.

I used pre emergent on several plants a few years ago and where it was used the secondary roots did not root down.
One of plants I used it on because my grandson was going to grow and knowing he wouldn't have time to do weed control. Between the wind and the pre emergent no roots off the main or secondaries grow. He didn't end up getting any pumpkins. While his brothers plant that was next to which didn't have any pre emergent grew a 700lb off the 359 Foss. I will not use it in the patch again.
