I've grown them in the past...I think....lol. There was some discussion in the past regarding what a true marrow is or isn't.

Wizzy, you know where I stand with marrows as a category in the GPC. For a long time I've felt they deserve a place especially along side field pumpkins, long gourds and watermelons.
For me one of the real benefits are that they have a relatively short growing cycle and require a fairly small space.
They can be a nightmare for splitting which just adds to the drama.
The bottom line is that they are really impressive to look at.

According to my research a marrow & a zucchini are one & the same...

Zucchini should definitely be a GPC category! Seems like you can't help but grow giant ones

Lol _dirt_

Marrow is C. pepo like a big zucchini on a field pumpkin. What I have read is that zucchini is a marrow that was bred to grow smaller on a condensed plant. So Zucchinis are just marrows that we’re bred to be prolific and thinner-skinned for use as a summer squash?

There will have to be a gpc standard for what is a marrow vs what is a field pumpkin because eventually they will cross and throw give in-betweens??

Here are the (GPC) rules for marrow:

17. Marrow – Cucurbita pepo
For competition purposes, the following distinctions are made between marrows and zucchini (syn. courgette): A marrow is grown on a vining plant, a zucchini on a bush type plant without vines. A marrow generally has rough skin while a zucchini generally has smooth skin. A marrow is generally quite uniform in thickness while a zucchini tends to taper out towards the blossom end.
Specific rules:
a. The vine must be trimmed within 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) of the stem.
b. Marrows may be green with green or yellow striping or completely yellowish-white. No orange colouring is accepted.

Marrows do best in climates similar to field pumpkins. If you want to know if they will do well in your climate, look to see if any really big FPs have been grown there.
Warmer temperatures will shorten their life span and therefore limit their size.
About 3/4 of all the really big marrows split. The larger you get, the worse your chances are. Of my seven largest marrows, only two made it to a scale. You need a good set of nerves to grow these.
I have been getting a few emails lately asking about seeds. I haven't grown marrows for several years now and do not have any seeds at all.

Good to know. Too bad the diseases will overlap but I sure want to try one just for fun. I bet there is a key to them not splitting just dont know yet... sounds like figuring that out is the key.
