Looking to start growing giant pumpkins. I have seeds from a local fair I bought but they don’t list anything about size or growers. Just that they were donated by a local giant pumpkin organization.
Where do I begin with growing?

Join some of the local pumpkin clubs. They have meetings and you will get a lot of good advice at them. search this site for info , ask questions on the new growers board. You can find some links on the links page. Sngpg would be one.

Well before winter hits get a soil sample send off tell who ever is doing sample its for Atlantic giant pumpkin. Then read all you can on this site dearing winter. Try to find seed with some decent genetics. You will need to do a spring test as well.

Great to see a new grower from Ma. So you have come to the right place. All the info you will ever need is at your finger tips on this site. And people willing to help out. Where in Mass are you from? If you don't know, there are 2 clubs from the area Southern New England giant Pumpkin growers and New England Giant Pumpkin Growers. If you want to you can send me an email z28blues@aol.com. We can talk and meet some of the other growers from the area. If your on the South Shore there are about 6 of us that work together. Great to see some one new local. It's a lot of work but so much fun to end the season with a pumpkin that everybody asks is that real.

This question gets asked a lot. Here is one post that got several thoughtful responses:

If your on the Northshore contact me 978-407-2616. I'm in Topsfield. Like Mike said start with growers as close as possible to you and all will fall in place, including much better seed.

Mike F I’m from Northern MA. I got seeds from the fair in Topsfield and the seeds were donated by the New England Giant Pumpkin Growers but they don’t specify the grower or weight.

Those are seeds donated by growers usually from the club. All should be good genetics. Just not notable pumpkins. Any one of those should be a good start. Being on the North shore. You want to hook up with anybody in the New England club. Woody would be the Man. 2 or more Topsfield wins. Take him up on his offer. Join both clubs I mentioned. Come to our winter luncheon. And then the SNGPG Spring seminar. Welcome to Giant Pumpkin growing. And you will not meet a nicer bunch of people that want to help you succeed at this. Send me an email. So I know your name and I look forward to meeting you next year at the scale.
