Speaking in terms of pumpkins of course. But, is there a rule of thumb about about how fast and how much weight a pumpkin loses after it is taken off the vine. I am assuming that if he had a WR pumpkin on the vine then that puppy would get weighed in Wisconsin or Minnesota to help keep the water weight up an minimize time off the vine.

Off the vine - figure around or just under a pound per day.

Vines in jugs of water, wet towels, and/ or shrink wrap? probably won't lose out on anything.

This is a great question...I'm sure Josiah weighed it before he left so I bet he can tell us exactly how much weight it lost...I'm guessing if it was a world record he still would have made the trip...might even have been more reason to make the trip.

There was a diary pic of one of the pumpkins in the back of an enclosed trailer. It looked to be nicely vented at the top of the trailer, but I also wonder about the impact of day time temps going across the country in the trailer.

I just want to know did he answer yes or no when they asked if he was transporting any fruits or vegetables.

I am with Andy.... I had one years ago I weighed in Altoona and weighed it a week later back in our town. That was a four hour ride freestyle with no jugs of water or covered and it lost exactly a pound a day.

He did weigh before he left and all I can say is it was heavier then Steves 2170 when he left home.

Hopefully he'll chime in.

He said he lost quite a bit of weight on his 2095 fruit last year.Something like 40 Poundsplus

I would say it depends on the size of the fruit? A larger fruit would have a larger surface area / volume leading to higher rates of water evaporating through the skin. As volume increases, surface area increases exponentially... if a 1000 lb kin loses a lb a day a 2000 lb kin may lose 3-4.

Just my thoughts, maybe untrue.

Good theory hayden-should proportionate to surface area

SoCalChris, there is no way it lost that much weight and if he weighed it at home or somewhere else before hitting the road, then his scale at home is wrong.

A pound or 2 sounds pretty reasonable, but if he had water jugs and wet towels it may have put on weight rather than lose it.

3-5 pounds per day on a fruit that's done growing, if your fruit is still taking in water the weight lose is minimal

It also seem after so much weight is lost they no longer lose weight, so the first week on a fruit that's not taking in water you could lose 20-40 pounds but that's all you'll lose, if that same fruit is still growing when you pick it, it'll take in water if you put the vines in jugs of water, the weight lose is almost nothing then

Tomorrow I'm weighing a fruit that took in 4 gallons of water in 12 days, it might've gained weight, but this fruit was young and was still growing 10 pounds a day when we picked it.

Thanks for responding Josiah. That is some interesting information. Your journey is almost as well-known as your winning. Best of luck season on your season finally.

Each gallon of water is 8.34 lbs, that’s impressive that it sucked that much up after being harvested....best of luck today at Weighoff Josiah.
