So here's my question... If more rooting is better then why don't growers let tertiary vines grow and root down and simply trim the leaves off, so they don't crowd the side vine leaves? That would give extra roots right? Just a thought but I don't see anyone doing it.

Probably because it's more hassle than its worth. Getting in and amongst the vines & leaves without damaging them or compacting soil isn't easy. It would be very awkward and vines & leaves grow so fast they'd be difficult to control.

You could try that Jeremy. It might help maximize more uptake from the soil, Initially, It may rob some of the the plants energy to make the vines but I think it still could be worth a try. I am not sure if anyone has tried it. It sounds like a lot of work.

I look at it as the secondaries are already maximizing the rooting in the desired soil area. Tert roots would just be competing with secondary roots while they aren't nearly as efficient of moving "poundage" back to the fruit.
