I generally keep the main going. I think if you terminate all growth the plant might sense it was frosted and just mature the fruit and stop growing. This year was different, with wind, bugs and critters breaking off most of the mains. I still keep some secondaries going. At least on the plants that still have pumpkins.

This has been talked about for years and years. WE still don't really have a consensus. My best one this year is on a pitchfork. (the main deadheaded after the pumpkin)

The main on my 2118 squash was growing like crazy and the fruit had slowed down some so I terminated the main a couple days ago hoping the fruit picks back up some. I figured it was worth a shot. There's always late season tertiary vines popping up here and there so the plant still has something growing somewhere.
