Hi everyone, referring to my diary, please see the last post:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryView.asp?season=2018&grower=75853&action=L
Question - I was wondering why there is so much growth here, and should I remove it all?
Comments concerning the weeping stem are welcome too, thanks.

The sulfer will help but if you really have leaking cracks I think clorothalonil would be worth a try. I think every weather change can have a big effect on both the plant and the disease pressure. Steady constant weather makes for less problems. P

Hi gerald, im going by the picture you posted. Do you have squash vine borer in your area? It appears you may have a great deal of rot in the stump, you can split the main and try and clean it out or you may want to cut it off all together and remove any rot from the main. You may have to cut off some secondaries as well.

I agree with Rick too.I'd start with removing the extra growth, scrape any rot out of the stump, sulfur it, put a fan on it, pray it doesn't keep rotting. If it does, cut it sooner rather than later

OK thanks guys I've now done all that; cut out the mess, applied sulphur, fan is on 24/7. I'll have a look into what fungicides might be useful. It's my fault, I let the area get overrun by excess growth which probably decreased ventilation and made the area suseceptible to fungal attack. We don't have squash vine borer in the UK (I think!)

The good news is that by digging out the rot, applying fungicide and drying the area until callous forms appears to have worked. Bad news is that a couple more spots of rot have appeared elsewhere, also on the main vine. In the short term I can treat those areas too, but what are the longer term implications? Can the pumpkin itself become vulnerable?
