I get deeply philosophical sometimes & care about other things besides growing pumkins but that relate to growing pumpkins... So here it is: what is the philosophy or mentality that you have about growing? Is it competition? Do you enjoy being the underdog? Do you enjoy the struggle? Or are you a type A who wants to win and enjoys the winning and achieving? A lot of this is about being the best. I know the people who I looked up to most as a kid were 'the best'. That was the hook for me to watch the Olympics for example. When you get older though you face many many challenges and life gets a little more complicated. Take this where you will maybe throw something out that folks wouldnt know from just from looking at your stats...

I am on a life long mission to make sure that giant pumpkins can continue to look just the way a small child would expect them to look.

There is sooo much I’d like to say also. But I’m going to refrain. I think what’s better for me is to block anything you say or ask anymore.

North Shore, or sign up for snap chat. I hear that what one posts on that social media is only there for a half hour or so then disappears.

All kidding aside,,, I enjoy growing because I love a challenge.
From the time we put the plants in the ground to the day we harvest, there's 344 things that can go wrong. I like figuring out those 344 things and doing the best I can to make them better or to avoid them from happening at all.

Good question!

One of the reasons why I grow them is because it's so much fun - planting a seed that has the potential to grow a 2000+ pound vegetable and to see how far it takes you! Watching all your hard work and effort pay off (hopefully) come weight-off time truly makes it all an awesome experience.

As well, it's a good way of spending time. I'm halfway through high school and during the summer, besides my part-time job, I am lucky to say I have A LOT of time on my hands. Wish that stays the case when I'm older. Ha!! I could be wasting my time playing video games 24/7 like a lot of my friends my age do, or I could be learning about soil biology, plant diseases, seed genetics, ... There's just so much things that you learn from growing giant pumpkins and it makes it that much more worthwhile.

im starting to think growing giants is more of a, way of life than a hobby. i love growing on good years to see the looks on peoples faces when your trailering one down the highway. mostly because, of all the great friends i have made in growing these insane things. i hate growing on bad years(especially this year) you practically need to be a rocket scientist to grow these things, because there is way to much you need to know and learn.

I was getting a little burned out, a whole lot worn out by arthritis. Then I went to the state fair weigh-off and was reminded why I do it. All the smiles they generate, all the questions, people taking photos. Looks like I may be growing one for the fair next year, my daughter even wants to get in on it. I will be cutting back some, putting more ground in cover crops. But I will keep on growing, at least for a while.

Profound mental illness.

Growing giant pumpkins is the only thing that helps to dull the pain.

Additionally, it helps me forget that I never achieved my childhood aspirations of becoming a firefighter astronaut.

To see the joy and happiness in peoples eyes, the amazement of seeing a pumpkin in real life, that big and the million and one questions people ask you bout that pumpkin, the smiles and photos r what keeps me coming back to this sport/hobby, it makes me feel like I made a persons day when they see a pumpkin that big and ask for a pic. :)
