Has anyone had noticeable success in affecting the amount of netting vs keeping the pumpkin smooth? Other than just picking a seed with the right genetics? Sometimes the canteloping can be so excessive it ruins the color wondering if anyone has any personal experience with somehow getting more or less canteloping...

My largest fruit started cantaloupeing around day 30, now north of 1200 and still growing 26 a day. Seems to be all genetics for me. Been covered since day 1.

It is a weight contest...Canteloping is good. Once mine get around day 50 they get washed, and wiped down with a micro cloth to bring out their beauty. But that is a trait desired in my crosses

Excess exposure to sun may cause it as it hardens the skin and it then cracks as it grows. More so it may be genetic. My current pumpkin started developing flesh splits with oozing day 15 and canteloping about 30.

Only one so far here... The northwest side has more than the top... I thought this was interesting maybe direct sun is not a huge factor. I do think its genetic and the light-to-chart ones seem to stay smoother but I have seen heavy thick ones which stay smooth also. I might investigate humidity or foliar fertilizer overspray as a factors... Or just accept that its out of my control. Thank you all.

ps do you find the underside of a rough canteloped pumpkin is rough also? I dont remember if ours was last year. I need to volunteer to be the guy who looks under the pumpkins this year--lol

It has nothing to do with the sun...It is the expansion of the pumpkin growing faster than the surface allows..Just like stretch marks. Some genetics are more prone to it.

Agree with Linus, all genetics. For example this year, 2 plants both had 1 pkn each and 1 was canteloping by day 30 (RIP), while the other is on day 45 and flawless. Both have the exact same set up with a white sheet and a white tent grown 30 feet apart.
