We had this happen a few years ago when I (stupidly) added 3 times the nitrogen I intended to. Pumpkin finally laid down and grew like a demon but wound up splitting.

I had this happen too in 2016. I was leaving town for a week so terminated main at pumpkin to lay it down manually and it was still upward a bit. Got home and a few days later and bad storm came through and destroyed it all. It’ll snap on it’s own weight if you don’t get it to lay down, You need to add support to get it to lay down gradually.

Dustin grew one that way to harvest in 2016. Turned out pretty cool. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryView.asp?season=2016&grower=56344&action=L
