Sorry to hear about your Dad's plants. But I grew my biggest pumpkin in 2016 from a bulb that did not set until August. I am no expert, but a lot of people suggest switching to a phosphorous focused fertilizer and away from a nitrogen based fertilizer to promote flowers. Just a thought. Remain Calm and Carry On.

concerning the ones pictured, they look to be @ the next DAY after pollination. are they attached to the plant still? you can't tell if one 'took' THAT soon; at least a week is needed and even then, after 20 DAP they can still abort. i'd say pollinate and wait at least 7-10 days before any judgements. you know i mean well, it just doesn't SOUND like it, lol!
