This one was going to open tomorrow or the next day. I didn’t want it so I snapped it off and peeled back the pedals and it’s a 3 lober..

Is this common? I’ve never seen one before

A few years ago, I pollinated a 3 lober for my 150 sq ft plant. Before going with it, I did quite a bit of research on what growers thought of them. The decade old thinking was...3 lobes not good, then it changed and a few growers set personal bests on 3 lobes. After growing a 3 lober, i am not sure i would do it again. I had a reasonable weight 704 pounds in 150 sq feet, but the shape was rather strange. My result is probably not typical of all 3 lobers.

Less lobes = thicker walls between the ribs of fruit. More lobes = thinner walls between ribs of fruit.

3 lobes typically results in a weird shape.

4 lobes is usually a longer, shorter, more of a square shape fruit.

5 lobes generally produces a taller fruit than a 4 lobe.

In the end, it doesn't really seem to matter and every fruit is different.

I had a nice fruit on a three lober on a 1421stelts years ago-It was my biggest pumpkin that year.1204# with a nice shape. the plant threw mostly 4 lobers but this was 3 was on the main and it was go time-I believe the next female was 3 lobes or weak looking so I went with the first one. A friend went with a three lober years ago on a 867 mombert plant.Longish genetics to start with and he had the biggest orange pickle/torpedo shaped fruit ive ever seen.
