Both of my 2118 Jutras squash suffer big time in the sun. Both of my plants look like crap. They wilt and then the leave edges get crispy and nasty. I can not afford shade nets right now. I’ll keep pushing through it but just disappointed in what my plants look like. It is not from lack of water and my other two AG plants are doing fine. Anybody else seeing this?

Would overhead irrigation be possible during the hot part of the day... ?

because i think it's 'neat', i've always used overhead sprinklers...i need to assemble and deploy about 15 very soon; following up to Glenomkin's suggestion, i strongly suggest that when using overheads, the hoses feeding them ALSO be buried...why? because the water in them is scorching HOT from the sun until the cool water comes through! other than that, how costly could it be?
probably about $3 per each Whizzer sprinkler, (Google that) and maybe another $7 for a spike base and PVC 1/2-inch piping, 'nuther $7 for a garden hose to be cut to length for the project. oh, yeah, a few hose-end repair fittings---everything Joel Holland-style,
automatically switched on for a minute or two, every other 15 minutes, i dunno;
Otherwise:
i've never used one, but perhaps a misting system to initiate evaporative cooling is in order;
i would read EACH of the following---i always figured that 'sun + watering creates magnifying glasses and will burn your plants' was a farce:

think about it: a magnifying (convex) lens is not flat on one side, the side that would be against the plant's surface(s).

I've never used overhead sprinklers until this year but its working great on my AG. I have a $20 timer on my spigot and it turns on a couple times a day. 95 degrees here and no sun scorch because of it.

You will need overhead watering of some sort for cooling of the plants in the heat. I'm using cheap impact sprinklers to limit the wilting and sunburn. I run them for about 10 minutes each hour in the hottest part of the day. Once the plant fills out they are not needed.

I bought a bunch of these spinners for 0.75 each. I think they really work well.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Looks like I need to get my sprinkler system set up and running. I have a hose timer for vacation but haven’t set it up yet because all it does is rain lately.

I feel your pain. Mine has had more problems than I care to count.

My 2118 gets the afternoon shade from a single oak tree from 12 to 3 pm so it’s got that going for it but it’s far from a superstar. Missing the first 3 secondary vines on the left side and generally speaking the leaves and vines are small and weak looking.

Give your plant a good drench. Should see a world of difference in a couple days. Real nasty heat coming our way in a few days.
