I have three plants and the secondaries are struggling on all of them but my smallest has a seven foot main with no secondary all are 6 inches long and not going anywhere. Ideas?

The last few years my plants seem to have trouble getting the This year for the first time I have a ribbon secondary coming off of a normal main. It is about 3' long and seems to be dividing out now. I just wonder if we are running into inbreeding problems. I just let them grow out, and if I end up with a big gap in a plant, I train a tertiary to take its place.

That didn't come out right. My plants have trouble getting the first few secondaries going but by about 4' out they straighten out.

Just be patient. The plants need optimal conditions for at least a week. The plant is growing ten new vines all at once before it was just growing one vine. . . Think about the extra work of growing ten more vines. . .Sun, moisture, temp. nutrition all must be there.

Try to help it out sometimes they just need a little fertilizer boost or water or the right weather.

Does growing direction make a big difference on how well secondaries set? N to S vs E to W?

The strongest growth will be towards the warmest brightest direction... Only speaking from my cool climate experience.

I seem to have this problem when the temp is high
