So right now I've got side vines covered nothing on the main. At this point probably to late for me to start on the main. For future reference should I have been covering the main? Thanks

I cover the main early to get that top tap root ignited then about 3 or 4 weeks later I rinse off the dirt. I like to keep my main exposed as the season progresses to look for any areas of rot that might pop up.

At a minimum, cover the main at each node since it shoots off a lower tap root followed by an upper one that curves down like a hook. I leave the space between the nodes unburied for disease reasons.

What Luke said,,,, yea, just the nodes.
Yea, I don't do the whole main like some do, just the taproot areas.

The Paton brothers fill a plastic pot with soil, compost, mycor, Azos and Root Shield, then invert it over the node. This keeps everything moist so the top tap roots will take off. I admit I am trying it a bit now, but I am using milk cartons cut in half. I can trim out the sides so the vine, the secondary and the leaf have room to grow. Will see how it works out. Easier than trenching and certainly won't cut any of the far-reaching roots.
