Hi Folks-

Based on the query posted a couple weeks ago, there appears to be sufficient interest in hosting a featured chat on the topic of soil testing & pumpkin fertility.

I'm working on lining up a couple resident soil/agronomy gurus and invite anyone with an interest in the area of soils/fertility/nutrient management to participate.

As with the featured grower chats, I encourage you to submit questions/topics for discussion in this thread.

I don't really have a formal script in mind for how this goes, rather lets just have an open discussion and see where it leads us.

Hope to see y'all Saturday nite!

That and the St Croix Growers Spring Meeting on the same day....

not that i know anything about it, but they could compliment each other, with a screen up somewhere with occasional checking-in-on it or something...

I’m interested in the use of slow release chemical fertilizer. Also in banding fertilizer vertically in the soil and also spatially... like could you fertilize differently from one node to the next to optimize uptake of antagonist minerals, and could you fertilize differently near the pumpkin vs the base of the plant. I don’t have any specific question. I guess the question I have is are there any outside-the-box fertilizing ideas possibly worth considering?

Humates. When adding Humates how long will they stay in the soil? How much would be too much?

The emptiness of my brain is not to be underestimerated.

Linus Van Pelt Engel Orange: the topic will certainly be fresh on the brain.

Magnesium questions:
My patches are loamy sand. OM 2.5%.I have trouble keeping my Mg level up. Start the season around 170ppm after adding 40lb/1000sqft of Epsom Salt each spring, drops back to 85ppm each fall soil test.
Can I add more in the spring?
I tried one year adding Mg in the fall to build it up but lost most of it over winter.

Does it leach slow, medium, or fast compared to other nutrients?

Is a good ratio of K/Mg 2to1?

What are the reasons CEC goes down when OM has stayed the same?

How can you raise your CEC other than adding compost or biochar?

Percent Base Saturation and TBS%

It is a confusing subject to me. Can you talk about them?

How does a Percent Base Saturation hurt you when it goes over 100%?
Why does it go over 100%?
I have many beds and areas I test and a couple have shot way up.

What is good TBS% to aim for?

How do these relate to CEC?

Question about Growth Products TKO Phosphite 0~29~26, label says not to mix with copper containing products, I assume they are talking about copper fungicides like copper sulfate or copper hydroxide not a fertiilizer like Urea Mate which has copper as one of its micro nutrients. Can I use Urea Mate as a foliar feed and TKO hand watered in the soil?

See you then Joe and all. I'll help with questioning that I know if needed and have questions regarding magnesium and raising it to what products others have used and have experience with to raise it quickly. Also curious to additions of humic acid and how others are applying it.

Would like your opinion on the Soil Test compared to the Saturated Paste Test. Is there a reason why more growers do not use the Saturated Paste Test?
