During last nights auction, an opening bid was made, and then a second bid. Then before a third bid was made, the first bidder was allowed to retract his bid. At this point the auction for this set should have been started over. The opening bidder sets the price for the auction to move forward. You may think that this is petty, or nit-picking. But, is it? Let me first say that I absolutely don't believe that anything but an honest mistake was made by the opening bidder. (I don't even remember who it was). My problem is with those that said "your bid is your word" and "People will remember", "you should be forced to honor your bid" and things of that nature. If you let the opening bidder make a bid, and then retract it, then the second bid (which was a reaction to the first bid) should be null as well. We shouldn't move forward from a bid that, at this point, didn't even exist. That allows the opening bid to set the price without having to "back it up". I have no problem honoring MY bid. And did so. I really like the cross and think that the seed was worth the price. Soooo, those of you that said "Have you been to an auction before" and "Read the rules". Should read the rules, or go to an auction or two. Or better yet maybe think your thoughts thru before posting negative things about people.

All I know about this is what I read above, in some circumstances I think you should be able to retract a bid, what if you typed in an extra zero? I think the bidding should go back to the previous bid, so in the above example it would be zero

The first bid on this particular lot was actually a carry over bid from the previous lot and was not meant for the lot. Your bid was for this lot and so should have been honored. You were given an out but you still agreed to take the lot. If you are still wanting to back away from it then get back in touch with the club.

I Thought by my saying " I have no problem honoring my bid" and "I really like the cross and think the seed was worth the price" was clear enough. I could try to make it more simple. And I paid within 5 minutes of the close of that lot. Sometimes its just sad when the point is lost

Hawker, I agree with you, the auction should have been started over. I saw what happened, and it was an honest mistake by the opening bidder. At that point, whatever happened after that should have been null and void. There is always a little lag in the online auction, but last night seemed a worse than usual. I think that contributed in the mistake by the opening bidder. Nobody's fault, just something we have to deal with.

I see what he's saying... If I open at $20 most will react with $25 or $30 If I open with $50 most will react with $55 or $60
Very rarely does it jump more than $5 or $10 until it gets above $100

It is mostly screwed up in reaction time. Some computer reactions are slower than others. Slow connections fast connections. Damn i don't know how pissed i get waiting for somebody to react to a bid or how many lots do you want!!!! I think it is just slow connections. I have fiber optics here it is quik.
