This past weekend we harvested the seeds from our 2,090.5 pumpkin we had on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. We did not have a good seed count so we may not be able to GIVE any seeds to individual growers.
We will make the bulk of our seeds available through the OVGPG seed sale, GPC, & OAF promotions. We will also have many more clubs who have sent bubble envelopes to get our seeds to before individual growers request.
This is the way we have issued seeds since we started in the early 90's, GIVING to the clubs not selling them for personal monetary gain. You can sugar coat it all you want but at the end of the day for every dollar you pocket to spend for yourself are dollars you are taking from the clubs to finance their functions & educate their growers.
It really disturbs me to see this trend of justifying reasoning to enable individuals to profit from the sale of seeds. There are many struggling clubs who desperately need these funds & ask that if you want to buy seeds do it from an entity that is giving 100% of their income back to the community & not their pocket.

Thanks, Dave. The Vermont Giant Pumpkin Growers, with around 70 members, is one of the small clubs you're talking about. Every dollar is conservatively spent, and we wouldn't exist without generous top notch growers like you.

Yes, great post. We have you beat steve and our members fluctuate between 2 and 4 members,,,,,, we need all the help we can get to support our weigh off and new growers meetings.
That being said, every grower I’ve even sent a bubble to has blessed us with the cost of a bubble.

Dave with all due respect,I Thank you for all you have done in this hobby & GPC. but the climate is changing in the growers world.Big Sponsors will feed the clubs in the future.SOGPG is a perfect example as is Safeway at Half Moon Bay.I love you brother as a Christian, but for you to tell me how to live just ain't right. The good Clubs will survive.I would like to help the clubs & do a presentation on how to land Sponsors for all club & raise funds.I personally haven't pocketed any money selling seeds. As I give it back to the growers. However I dont feel there is anything wrong with selling your hard work time & money spent. As I spend thousands each year to grow these monsters .The clubs to update there software & get with the climate change. The internet has open the door to much faster growth of this hobby/sport.We will survive & selling seeds is a perfectly normal thing to do.When I tell your average Joe that us seed sellers are considered prostitutes. They look at me like why? You grew it. You spent countless hours & $$. You cant get some back? So really my good friend. Old school is fading away. Get your new Bubba1317 software now. JK Love ya! Now get the pitchforks & torches out!!BURN BUBBA BURN!!LOL

everyone is different dave. the ohio valley has been selling seeds for many many years now. in fact your club was one of the original profitable clubs due in part to extracting seeds from prize winning pumpkins and then selling them to recoup funds---nothing wrong with that either, -----one of the reasons ovgpg is a top tier site and weigh-off.
in any event if you grow it? its your call as to what you want to do with it.a really big world out there and, selling pumpkin seeds is a very very tiny drop of pee in a sand bank
Ron and my policy forever has been 1. honor first all club auction and orange angels requests as long as the seeds are available---they deserve this 2. honor secondly all individual seed requests based on supply-growers work harder on seeds they desire. 3. after both above are filled we sell our seeds on the WOW web site.

Facebook is becoming a great place to sell seeds i see it all the time. Instead of just a chosen few making $$$ i think we all should participate. Why not make a few bucks? Ebay...Amazon after all when you buy a seed it is yours to do what you like

It was always fun when you could just send a mailer. It was like Christmas when you got it back, I have so many growers to thanks for unbelievable generosity. Emmons Delatas Holland Lloyd Mombert Kuhn Calai Pukos . The first seed I ever had to win was the 723 Bobbier my 846 Calai was a-stamp seed. But I think these two seed put a price tag on the seeds of the future. There were more Mombert Stelts very hot seed thank you all your crosses will forever be in all of our genetics

Another thing I keep telling you fellow growers on BP here. But nobody is listening. Put down the pitchfork & read my lips. The growers buying these seeds are 85% NEW from the worldwide internet. They have never heard of Kens great site or any of your clubs.I sold seeds on Dons site for 5 years & was doing close to 7500$ a year in gross sales when Baby Huey & gang brought a end to it all with there false allegations. We are not hurting the clubs as people know how to get seeds in the community. The club auctions are dying due to to many seeds The supply is so great It used to be 3-5 really big kins to pick from each year. Know its 20 or more. Supply & demand is driving sales down. It will all work out.If your club needs help contact me I will give you some pointers on how to change it up & start rolling with the new flow. The world is constantly changing.I love you all! BTW_The other problem is auction attendees are looking for deal instead of looking to support their favorite club. More Heavy hitters need to buy seeds at auction & set the example to the growers.I do this myself I paid $530 for my 2145

Mark is right. I'm a newer grower, the first seed I ever bought was his 1317 on world class gardening. The next year, 2017, I found this site. I bought my seeds through auction. I have seeds from 11 different pumpkins so far this year. I have paid for 8 of those. I don't have the connections to get free seeds, I also don't always feel comfortable asking for them. I don't have a lot of money so I want to spend as little as possible. When I have seeds worthy of growing, I'm sure I will have more connections. I'm also sure I will be able to sell them. But I will adopt pap and Ron's policy, as I feel it's the right way to go.

Dear Wolf3080, in 2017 you´ve found this site...and that´s when you should become aware of the many friendly growers who would love to send you their seeds. You don´t need to feel bad in any way when asking for seeds. Growers don´t push you to grow their seeds, but many of them feel honored by seed requests, and you are doing them a great favor when asking for seeds and then actually planting them. It´s not great to ask for seeds in order to establish a seed collection in your drawers. Asking for particular seeds you are interested in and then growing them, that´s how it works and both sides (you and the friendly donor) will be glad. Many growers would gladly send you a couple of seeds (two or three, perhaps even more in some cases) for the cost of a self-addressed bubble and postage, so you could start more than just one seed and then transplant the one or two strongest seedlings. Trying to attract new growers who don´t know about BP is one thing (and I´m in favor of this strategy), but as soon as the new grower is lured into the madness of BP the new grower should be made aware of the great possibilities of this site, for example, there is still the possibility for differences which might exist in how seed orders (from the seed selling site) and seed requests from grower to grower (addressed to the orange envelope email addies on BP) are treated. ...just my opinion...perhaps...perhaps not just mine.

I've told many non-growing friends that giant pumpkin competition is the only one that I know of where your competitor will gladly help you. That being said, it's not that I feel bad about asking for seeds, I'm just not comfortable doing it. I'm not one to ask for help...in anything, I would rather just do it myself. I feel like I can't do the seed justice. (my 1st year I killed both plants, 2nd year, 3 plants, 1 kin 290 lbs) I don't want to disappoint the donor, I also don't feel like I know other growers well enough. I have asked 2 growers this year for seeds. I sent a bubble to 1, the other never responded, which doesn't help my confidence in asking for seeds.

I would guess...thru kind, respectful requests, and then a prepaid bubble envelope after the grower of the seed that is requested acknowledges your request? Not sure, but I think that is how it works. PS...anyone know where nowthen is? Peace, Wayne

I'm new at this it's only my second year. Last year I messaged two different growers asking for their seeds. They had no problem sending seeds to me. I'm from Canada so shipping a bubble turned out to be a lot more than the growers thought it would be.Both growers offered to pay the balance of the shipping cost on their own dime.I couldn't let them do that so I sent them the difference. It ment a lot that they offered to do this for someone they didn't know. I'm still not comfortable asking for seeds but I'm sure if I asked most growers would help.

Its all controversial but my view is the clubs should spend their money on education and outreach, on building the community amongst growers, and for ribbons and small prizes for participation, especially in "other" growing categories. The larger prize payouts for top growers of pumpkins should be covered by sponsors, in my opinion, not the club. One way to attract sponsors could be to grow more crowd-pleasing pumpkins. I am gonna really stir the pot here but I think we underestimate how repulsed the public is by the lack of pumpkins that actually look like Charlie Brown pumpkins. It would help the sponsors if at least 1/3 of the entries were HD contenders. If the HD payout was (equal?) to the that of the largest pumpkin... it would really balance everything for the better, for everyone.

Glen...all clubs & fundraising capabilities are different. I truly respect your idea of education & outreach, but in Kentucky, we are a small weighoff site. Growing, but nothing like the big boy weighoff's. 9 AG's last year, I think! But growing in the CC watermelon group. Almost 30, if I remember correctly. And approx. 1/2 over 200#'s!! We split our prize money almost equal b/tween AG's & CC's, and no money to any other. There is a crowd vote for HD winner, but no money available. Peace, Wayne

Donkin the seed is given to the HH. Club seeds are bought by people wanting too help there club.Or people afraid to ask for the seed. But some clubs that sell lots of seeds. They tell there HH to not give them out. I have asked for seeds from some of these HH clubs and was told they didnt have any.If they like you they will give them to there friends in a very tight circle one. Here is tip for clubs. Get the old fart out of the controlling chair in your club. Give the look for a big sponsor job to your most passionate grower. If the guy or gal is not excited as a 12 year old looking for a sponsor pick some one else.Mr serious is not the BEST salesman.Committees stink & will slow you down.Best to get a modern thinking committee. Old school is dead.
