Prize Structures at an Event are up to the event/organizer.
(Event A) Squash and Giant Pumpkins compete for the same money. (Lets say $4,000 Top prize)
(Event B) Has separate Squash prize structure.( $100 for #1 Sqaush and $4,000 for #1 Pumpkin)
Can/Could a person who grew a qualifying green squash weigh at event B as a pumpkin? Or since it can be ruled as a squash does it have to weigh as a squash?

Our local fair has all in one category and I believe it is just gpc rules that categorize color differences. But I am guessing even a gpc event can manage how its local rules go and just need to report the results to gpc in their preferred format of color categories.

answer: Prize Structures at an Event are up to the event/organizer.......thus yes maybe, no maybe :) The GPC asks for results based on color guidelines, so that a green pumpkin is suppose to be reported to the GPC as a squash. The green pumpkin should not be reported to GPC in the pumpkin category. In the above example: if the weigh-off stipulates prize money for a separate category, the ruling most likely would be it only qualifies for the squash prizes. So......if you want to compete your green pumpkin for the big pumpkin money, one would have to go to a weigh-off where they are all in one prize structure....but the results to the GPC should indicated that the XXXX green pumpkin was a squash.

In the event B scenario you'd normally have to enter as a squash. And yes the squash could end up with substantially less prize money even if the squash is the largest fruit at the show. (Jutras, Jarvis, and I are well aware of this. ha ha.) This is how weigh offs around here are set up. I know it going in and still go for the Green Glory! I just try to enjoy the irony of the podium situation. ha ha.
The Event A scenario is an easy fix for that, except that in that case you might only be allowed to bring 1 fruit and not 2, which is a fair trade off in my mind.
I'd favor Event A method PLUS a squash bonus, of course! ha. Squash are harder to grow, why wouldn't they get MORE money?? ha ha! Event organizers don't see it that way, I guess. I expect that the lower prize money is a result of the second-class nature of squash. Not many people care about squash. Why are they green anyway!? Everyone knows pumpkins are supposed to orange! ha ha! It's all part of the giant vegetable madness. Grow Greenies anyway!

One day, in the not too distant future, a greenie will be the largest friut in the land and we'll all want to grow giant green squash. Here's why: all that greenness, it ain't just for looking pretty. It's chlorophyll. The stuff of photosynthesis. And it's close to the sink; force feeding the fruit what it needs to grow.
Yes, one day we'll look back and wonder why we wasted our time with those lazy non photosynthetic fruit when there were hard working green-producing seeds to be planted.
Not for the money. Not even for the glory, ... but because we can. Go greenies!!
