2145.5 McMullen is a great seed, but it will be pricey this year. How are you going to get by without a 2145 in your lineup? Well, I noticed some folks have been busy... I noticed eight 2145.5 remakes...

867    Davis
1082    Zaychkowsky
1175.5    Ailts
1176    Grams
1267    Westphal
1450    Cooper
1789.1 Mendi
1989.5    Daletas

(Correct me if I'm wrong about these...)

Now before you hound these people with requests, lets see if anyone wants to plug their remake here or they can let us know how we can get one...

Also, here is something to get excited about (a little bit anyhow). I've searched 330 seeds to try to find a seed with a higher average progeny weight. The result? Yes, a handful of standout seeds may be nearly as good as the McMullen.

Only one though actually came in with HEAVIER progeny than the McMullen. I'm not talking about a seed that was only grown a few times... This seed was grown 18 times by 18 different growers in the GPC data (17 on pumpkinfanatic website)... Anyone care to guess?

I'll post about some of the other good lines of pumpkins sometime in the next few weeks.

That was also my guess. The 2096 Meier has remarkable numbers. It was such a shame that there were so few viable seeds in that pumpkin.

I plan to grow a 1293.5 Benson 2016, a self pollinated 2145.5 McMullen. It was 18% heavy.

I’ve said this before, but any of the above could be the next big thing. But when you don’t have a 2K plus weight behind the last name, less heavy hitter types aren’t gonna grow it. If the 2145 was only a 1145 McMullen after a hypothetical split that never happened, would anyone have ever tapped into the top seed of all time? Genetics would have still been there.

Great post, gets the wheels turning for next year.

My very short list of very top preferences from what I've studied number wise right now are the 2145, 2096, 2624 and 2230 in that order for proven pumpkins. I'd be very interested in hearing from others out there any thoughts on what might be comparable to any of those seeds. I may even consider crossing one of those into a 1844 or 2118 squash plant.

The St Croix Grower's Association will have one of the few remaining 1625 Gantner and a 1756 Howell in our auction on Dec. 29th so that a lucky grower could remake this cross themselves!

2185 Brandt (15) +19% heavy. I have never understood why this seed has not received more attention. Heavy genetics on both sides: (F)2096 Meier x (M)2323 Meier.

Yes guys, good call bnot, the 2096... Which was the pollinator to the 2323.7 I presume... this whole lineage appears to have good genetics for growing weighty pumpkins.

There seems to be more here than just B. Meier using a greenhouse and being an exceptional grower, it does seem to be a good line genetically too.

1502 lbs avg progeny for the Meier / 1492 lbs average for the McMullen

There is a little bit of a duh factor in saying the top 2009 Wallace progeny could maybe a good lineage... but it was interesting to see that this was the one seed that does more or less match the mcmullen (The McMullen has been grown 105 times now, and if the 2096.6 could be grown 87 more times would it produce some outliers as big (or bigger?) than the 2624.6? Cast all opinions and knowledge aside, the math says yes.

History shows the pumpkin that will reach 3,000 could descend from some side branch of the best lines. If you have an exceptional plant, I'd say self it and try to get it the best out of it that you can, hopefully others will try it... Of these top two pumpkins for progeny weight one is selfed and the other is a cross of selfed pumpkins? Not entirely sure about this... was the 2096.6 sibbed or selfed?

11/20/2017 12:32:11 PM

In the details section it reads sibbed

Ok so that's making this even more interesting... so the 2096.6 was a cross of two selfed pumpkins, which were sibs.

Two 2328 Meier (2009 wallace x self??) plants went into the 2096.6 Meier. Wow. Thanks for the info.

The 800 McMullen in my book is the only true "remake." It is the reverse cross of the 2145. Same parentage. Not sure how many are out there.

When I grew the 2096 three seasons ago the plant was an absolute beast! Had issues getting a fruit set but still ended up growing a 1007.5 that was 9% heavy. I pollinated it with the 1730 Werner which grew me an 8% heavy fruit.

This season I grow the 1007.5 to 1247 Pounds that was 8% heavy, to the new chart, and pollinated it with the 2145. I also made the reverse 2145 X 1007.5 which weighed 1266 and was near 10% heavy.

Both seeds will go in the ground in 2018, might throw in another 1007.5 also... Hoping for some big things out of these seed lines!

There are great crosses out there. Some have both these lines put together.

I do agree that a seed from a remake is a gamble, with the 2145.5 or 800 your odds might be better, but isn't everything a gamble? Even with a clone of the world record plant you couln't guarantee a flower with the right shape or number of cells would show up.

See my latest post & see if i can spin any more wheels in your head...

Let me explain it better with my redneck thinking.

I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer here.Just keeping it real.

Remember that guy in school that could beat up everybody with one hand tied behind his back.Tougher then the guys 3 grades ahead of him.well the 2145 (Butch) is that guy.Ok Now you go to his fathers brother & say We want you to father anther Butch the bully. We will hook you up with Butches Aunt his mothers sister. Now we expect this new child to come out as tough as Butch even tougher. all of Butches siblings are just moderate fighters at best & a couple are just plain wimps.lol See the combinations of chromosome matches are liking playing the lottery. So i say buy a lottery ticket if you wish. You have better odds of getting hit by lighting standing in your basement.lol

Luck is a big part of it, Bubba was the 1317 skill or luck?

Answer to your question my friend:

The grow of the 1317 was a bad year amending my soil. I blew it that season. However the genetics of the 2009 Wallace & the 1495 Stelts was spot on. Luck I guess is as good as any way to say it.The next year was still my best year ever soil was spot on growing 5,370 lbs in 3 fruits & the 2014 Long gourd 138.5 new United Sates record that year.

Yes Bubba is lucky & skill(experience)both.Im still learning & always will be till they plant me in the compost pile.

In this case Bubba, your redneck thinking is spot-on. Nicely played analogy.

I can't guarantee anything, but I would like some experienced growers in the northern areas to try my 867 Davis.

Guess if it isn't worth planting I need to throw all the seeds in the trash lol. I'll grow it. 1756 x 1625.5

Thanks Sheriff... hope a few folks give it a try since both parents selfed seeds... The genetics might be there... Yeah, try for a pb from your own seed.

These top growers are smart they'll see it if its good... besides the bulk of the supply of McM's wont last more than about one more year, perhaps.

Be optomistic, that's my view of it. I appreciate Bubba Clementz's humor and I get what he's saying...

He has made some good choices about what to plant I can't agrue with that! Not sure a $500+ seed is gonna be the best choice for everyone, though.

I have sent a few seeds out. The weight on my pumpkin shouldn't scare people for what I dealt with on growing environment this year. It's what's in the seed that counts.

All I can do is hope it Carrys on similar traits to the 2145. Guess we will find out when it hits the dirt.

I am a believer in the 1756. Some lines just have good genetics, like an 1161 or 1495 it doesn't matter who grows it... the genetics is just plain there... my opinion. I don't have an opinion about any of the remakes. It is possible though that a small pumpkin can have top genetics.

11/27/2017 3:47:27 AM

I grew an old Wallace x Pukos seed this year and it only would have made it to 450 or 500 lbs (long story short i picked it very early so it didn't even make it past 300)...

Anyhow, I planted 50 different seeds this year and regardless of what the weight says, I'd say that plant had the best genetics of any plant I've ever grown.

@Sheriff --You've been at this long enough that I'll take your word for it... It looks like for you your 1756 seed beat a McMullen? I would be happy to include it in my very small seed exchange, if you would be willing to mail me at least a dozen. wsu_brandon@hotmail.com
