I have recently been in contact with a German grower trying to get seeds from a prominent North Western grower for his seed auction. The price of the seeds was ok, but the postage was stupid. $33 postage for 2 seed. that is not right. Another example money where our hobby should be helping one another but in stead takes advantage.

The grower emailed me and is concerned he will be recognized and treated unfairly because of my post.

Way to go you pumpkin growers that want to help other growers.

I am sorry my friend.

I sent some seeds to Belgium last year for less that $10. In the past I have sent seeds to England, Poland and Spain, and the postage was reasonable.

I just sent a package of tomato seeds to europe in a bubble. It cost me $13.50 for postage. If I had wanted tracking on the package the price would have been $41.00 . $33 might not cover the costs depending on what postage options the grower was intending.

bnot is on the button. It's $13.50 for any bubble I get from the USA. In 2007 it was $3.80 so it has jumped a bit.
It only costs me €2.50 to send a single bubble the opposite way today.
Every American grower I have dealt with to date has treated me very fairly so I cannot complain. I don't believe growers are trying to skim $ by charging extra for postage. Just my two cents.

That would be with tracking and insurance. Those are quite similar to the prices I pay and some I pay are worse.
The last batch of seeds I sent to New Zealand with tracking was $72.50 The last one I sent to Australia was $57.80.
I send from both Canada and the US. So the $33.00 does not surprise me at all.
Just to clarify, I have NEVER charged shipping to any of the above.

I will requalify my last sentence as I hit post without a re read
"I have NEVER charged more than the actual shipping cost".

12-15 sounds about right without tracking or insurance.
I would send my seeds that way but not auction quality seeds.

US Postal has to pay for their life time benefits package somehow. :(

I sent a small bubble first class for 3.00 a couple days ago. However, there were about 5 other options to choose from for speed of delivery, tracking, insurance, etc that went all the way up to $42.00. I would get more info before I accused anyone of a scam. If you paid $33 and the sticker on the package was far less then it would be a different story.

Also, if you didn't think it was a fair price just don't get the seeds. You were not forced to get them. I've only been here a short time but it's obvious there are an abundance of growers willing to help and share seeds. Find the deal that's right for you.

Sounds like the postal service not the grower is who are trying to cover their costs.

Owen, I hope your German "grower" friend isnt afraid of being treated unfairly now that you have cleared up the case of "taking advantage of growers" for us.

Thanks...

Owen if you are referring to the seeds that I think you are, I will take them and cover the $33.00 for shipping. Let me know!

It costs $1.50 to send 1 or 2 seeds to the US from The Netherlands. A whole bubble full of seeds costs $3.00. It goes by weight here as long as it fits into a mailbox. I just sent a soil sample (1 cup) to Canada for $7.00. Sounds like the US mail service is doing something wrong or somebody is making an awful lot of money.

Or just don't purchase them and wait for an auction to support a club

All depends on what method you choose. Plain Jane or bells and whistles.
I just bought seeds from the USA , same amount of product , two costs...$3.80 and $15.95 for same package.
The question is ---Do you really need the expensive method ?
The method was probably the problem for the $33.00

I sent a t-shirt from Germany to the USA and it cost me 7 Euros, about 10 dollars, took 7 days, just last week. I have never tracked a bubble pack, I guess if one thinks that helps okay. All is good, I am just a bit weird because I send mine for free trying to just get them plant...LOL

Sorry for being such a butt, I will disappear for a few months again.

Cost me $18 to send a cup of soil from Vancouver Island, BC to Parma Indiana, USA. Would have been $26 with insurance. $33 for postage and handling (bubble envelope, time etc...) does not seems high, but after all it’s an international package, insurance, priority post etc....pay the piper or grow local seeds...pretty simple.

I just sent 2 -2043 to Spain for Class/Service:     First Class International ®     $3.23 I thought what the hec I will try it I wrapped them in 2 business cards The 2043 is thin seed like Joel Hollands 3,363 they look just a like. They both made it undamaged.I wouldn't do this with a hard to replace seed. But with that savings I might try it again. I did fill out the customs form & claim them as pumpkin seeds.
