If we had no 2145 McMullen to sow next year, what would you choose to grow?

Theres about 80 interesting crosses with 2145 in it and I agree on the 800 McMullen.I gave my last 2145 away but still have two 800's-I think its a coin flip between those two seeds

I've been halfway tracking results of fruit that used the 2145 as a pollinator, not a bunch of data so far.

Looking at the GPC results, no seed other than the 2145 really stands out to me. Might try something unproven next year if I can't get a 2145.

Need to bring in some new-old genetics to our crosses lest we begin suffering inbreeding depression (which I already believe is manifesting itself through incredibly weak defensive traits).

just sayin.

I am deciding on next year. Nearly all big pumpkins grown now have the 2009 genetics in it...and it is looking like future years most will have the 2145 in it. I might have to be different. Seriously thinking about the 1969 Haist 2014 to be crossed with the 1625 Gantner. 1969 Haist is the biggest ever grown without 2009 genetics. In 4 years..what will be the biggest without 2145 genetics?

I think the bigger question is what seed grows big today that does not have the 1725 Harp in it's background. Even the 1969 Haist and 1730 Werner, both void of the 2009, have the 1725. Beyond that we can trace almost every, if not every seed line today back to the 845/723 Bobier, 846 Calai, 898 Knauss, 801.5 Stelts and 935 Lloyd. If you can find a line without these, you may be on to something.

Until then, you only get so many seasons to grow, if you want to grow the biggest, plant the seeds that do so.

I'm seriously considering crossing 2118 Jutras or 1844 Holub into my pumpkins next year. Not trying to start a new sqaush line or anything but I think 2145x2118* and 2118*x2145 sounds good!

I like that idea Mike. If you can get them both I'd say fire away!

Just like the 1161 Rodonis, the 2009 Wallace, the 2145 McMullen etc.... there will be the next big seed. It could be out there right now from this years crosses... such a guessing game at times.

Luke, I believe the 1057 Howell is the link to the great seeds. I believe if there are any 1057's left, crossed with todays giants you would have a super seed in 2019. Jim
