Just curious, what is a reasonable amount you guys think it takes to grow a 1,000 pound pumpkin.

About 5 or 6 hundred for me. Without an expensive seed.

depends on if you're just starting out or if you have an established patch. Established with previously purchased fertilizer, fungicide, insecticide, hoop house, heating cables, pickup truck etc then probably just your "time" and your water bill. If not established well you're going to need all of the above via cash or perhaps barter.

Its 300.00 to 500.00 for the first 1000 pounds then it goes up 1,500 for each 500 pounds from that point.

This is a mathematical answer for my patch so some numbers may vary from patch to patch.

I'm with mike.you can grow 1,000 lbs on even less than 200 if conditions are right.

If you look around now, you can find some supplies on clearance and save a bundle. I found tree and shrub generic merit for just $1.99 a bottle. Some cities will give you free or low cost compost. I know a horse stable with a huge pile of composted manure and all you have to do is shovel it into your truck. You can get seeds with decent genetics for the cost of a bubble mailer and postage. If you look around, you can keep costs reasonable.

I grew a WR squash (1234 lbs) and a European record pumpkin (1256 lbs) back in 2007 for about $25, together. You can replace a lot of expensive stuff quite easily with free or cheap stuff if you are creative.

For me its easily over 500 and that's without a poly-tunnel which we need, otherwise they wouldn't grow here

It depends on where you live. Some climates require more expensive things like greenhouses, cooling / heating systems, grow lights etc to reach 1000.

All good advice here. It can be done cheaply. You have to utilize the resources available to you.

I won't say what I spent but I will say this... I have 3 patches all are amended for proper balance... I spent a lot on amendments probably 3 times as much as most.... I also had to get a whole new everything... first year growing at the new house... this year was a game changer around here.... but what I do is some things are a yearly expense some are long term holdings as I call it ... my wife is very good at keeping tabs on my spending ... well not all of my spending but now she keeps a folder for the tax man in case he comes nocking but to grow a 1000 pound kin I feel can be done for a couple hundred bucks... 12 full competition plants well I always say about a dollar a pound and I am a little over 1 dollar per pound this year and that includes everything.... yes everything.... long term and short term.. nothing lasts forever anymore.... and the cycle continues every year..... do it for the love of growing not the cost of growing ...
