So what happens if a pumpkin is judged sound upon arrival to a weigh-off and is damaged during the weigh-off itself? I am sure the sponsor would not want a cracked pumpkin for display but what do the GPC rules say about whether this would be an official weight or not?

We had this same situation where the pumpkin was dropped, split open into 2 pieces. It was not the growers fault and therefore was judged as a sound pumpkin as far as the GPC went.

They dropped my pumpkin when they were loading it to take it to the scales about 10 years back at Half Moon Bay. It cracked and it was ruled DMG. It was only about 1000 pounds, but for me at the time that was big!

Other problems also show up during weigh-offs. Have direct contact set up w/your team & district coordinator! Several years ago our 4x4 scale stopped working w/1 pkn left to weigh!!! Ky. folks/site coordinators called Andy W., told the story & Andy allowed us to use a certified in line scale to weigh the final pkn!!! I truly believe that the GPC reps will make the best decisions possible!! Peace, Wayne

At Siegel's Cottonwood Farms where I took Porky. I saw a pumpkin get damaged when the loader driving a large tractor trying to loaded a pumpkin onto a trailer with two pumpkins onboard rammed the pallet onto one of the pumpkins. I don't know how bad it was I was standing on the opposite side waiting for my pumpkin to be loaded.

Four years ago while bringing a pumpkin to the scale I stepped on the rope which secured the pumpkin and was left dragging on the ground.I figured the person on the other side who tied it had the end but we dropped and cracked a 750 lber . There was a lot of tension and the blaming started. We weighed the pumpkin as good but this is never forgotten. Every year I hear "Watch out for the rope!". Don't step on the rope!"Ha Ha. There's a lot going on during a weighoff so remember to be careful and be sure.Don't let this happen to you!lol!

Hi Lee, I had an issue years ago with someone's pumpkin that went bad right after an official weight. It was ruled that if the judge ruled it a good pumpkin and it got weighed, it is an official weight. Thank you for a great weigh off on Saturday, Mari Lou

agree totally with black mamba. if its damaged due to accidental mishandling, etc, through no fault of the grower, the weight should count.
once you deem a entry sound, then after weighing it goes down?, the weight will count.
another reason why judging is soooo important -agree with joels comments here as well.
