Hoping someone can help me ID this for a friend. It came up volunteer in her garden. The leaves look like a pumpkin, but it sure doesn't look like a pumpkin?

Looks like a gourd. The small decorative are cucurbita pepo, same species as field pumpkins and summer squash. The different can cross pollinate and give you all kinds of shapes and colors. I once got what was supposed to be field pumpkin seeds from a grower, but it became obvious that he grew summer squash and gourds and the bees cross pollinated them.

I guess the next step is to ask her what she planted there or threw out there. I will keep you posted
