When a growers pumpkin is being placed on a scale is the weight of that pumpkin to be displayed clearly at all times and face the growers and crowd ??

I think it is sorta fun to hide it till the weight settles on the display...then reveal it one digit at a time!! Curious as to why this question? You think someone is manipulating the display? Curious as to how that could be done? Peace, Wayne

Anything less than complete transparency should be viewed with suspicion.
Especially when many thousands of dollars are on the line.

I like to cover it up when it gets down to the final three. Let the scale settle than remove the sign in front of the scale. Builds good suspension!

At our weigh offs, 90% are clearly displayed as the fruit hits the scale, but the last 3-4 are always covered until the scale settles to it's final weight. Then the numbers are shown one at a time, from last to first. It's good suspension for the growers & the crowd. After all it is a show as well as a weigh off.

Nothing worse than not covering the weight readout for the final few. The suspense of showing one number at a time from right to left is the best part of the day.

Should the weight be fully visible for everyone to see or just read aloud ??

Stillwater it is visible to the crowd and Joe reads it out.

We dont have a screen as our weigh off can't afford one. That said the screen can be seen by all the judges and weighing staff. Our top weights are covered up like Phill and Jane's. Most of our top weights are photographed many times. Ian

At Anamosa, our location doesn't work out well for a display for everyone to see. As each entry is unloaded it is taken right to the scale. There is room for a few people to see the scale readout and it is announced to the crowd. They are then hauled into the big multi purpose room in the community so the crowd can walk through to view them. Field pumpkins are generally displayed outside the building. A top 10 listing is displayed on screens, switching between categories for the crowd to see. At Pawnee City all are unloaded on the town square and then weighed. 2 years ago they had a display of the weight, last year they didn't and weights were announced. Pawnee City's weighing is all outside, with more room than the indoor location in Anamosa. Each site seems to work just fine for the individual circumstance.

Having a readout from the scale visible to all spectators is critical for our weighoff. One or two members of the crew keep a foot on the scale while the straps are removed for suspense. Then they back off and have the big reveal. I don't understand how you could have a GPC event and not provide this basic level of awareness and entertainment. The GPC registration is $350. If you can pay that but not afford to get a scale display? And the winner takes home more than $1000 in almost any major weighoff? Hmmmmmmmmmm

Donkin, still curious as to what brings up this question? Do you think scales are being manipulated? Peace, Wayne PS...I am sure that some sites are prohibited by physical, or financial reasons to be able to allow everyone to see the display, but sorta think that if anyone wanted to see the display, they would be allowed to do so.

Hey Carl, we have 2 digital readouts ... one big one facing the crowd and a smaller one for the officials to verify as correct. We cover the big digital readout facing the crowd and ensure that both readouts are the same, before removing the cover on the big readout and announcing the weight. Works for us...
