I received a soil sample result for a new plot next year. Surprised that magnesium levels were very high. They recommended calcitic lime (ph 6.3) but all I can find includes magnesium too... I guess I'm worried about magnesium levels "locking up" the others. Is extremely high magnesium a problem (dense clay soil)? If so, what could I supplement? I plan to plant some mustard next week and want to amend first.

Post the full set of soil test results (organic matter, K, Mg, Ca, P etc.), this should make it easier for others to give you some decent hints. Also, what´s the type of your soil? Did you already add anything to your new plot (compost, manure etc.) before you had taken the soil sample? Which depth of your soil profile is covered by the sample (maybe 6" or 8" or 10")?

The ratio of calcium to magnesium is more relevant than than the level of just magnesium.7 to 1 ca+ to mg is ideal.lower than 3 to 1 isn't good and theres some southern clay soils that are high mg- low ca that are poor soils.

The plot is 2500 square feet. test was from 8-9 inches depth. New ground , No amendments yet ( have bought 100lbs of gypsum) I have posted today my test results under "jrfarm1" in diary section.

Your Mg level doesn´t look too bad. I would try to get K a bit higher with some 0-0-50.
