Has anyone attempted repairing a split at the next to the stem by cutting a wedge in it and putting in another wedge piece from another pumpkin?

Hobbit- Do a site search by "stem split" or "stem surgery" and read about the "filet Method". I've had great success saving a couple pumpkins with bad stem splits over the years using this method.

I'd have to research stem surgery myself but if it makes you feel better, I've seen post-op pumpkins at the weighoff that had the stem split wide open...big enough to fit your fist in...they were healed...stay on top of it hobbit...good luck

Don't try repairing them, clean them out good, fans and powder. There is way to split the stem so it won't keep splitting on you. Hopefully somebody with more experience on it will chime in.

Trying to plug hole like a graft will only cause more problems I believe. If you can't find help on how to fillet, trim some plant away to slow it down and allow it to heal a bit as it splits slower.

Good luck!

I agree with dustin. You cant stop it,or patch it because thats how the stem shoulder area wants to expand but you could slow it down by slowing growth down.Keep it dry/dusted and ungunked and drink beer and watch the show:)

I have fixed them by drilling a hole at the furthest extent of the split. I figured this out one year because I had remembered seeing someone stop a split on a shovel by drilling a round hole at the furthest point of the split. The circle acts as a hinge an it prevents the split from growing and expanding towards the vine.

The split hasn't progressed, and she's still gaining weight. So I'm gonna do what cojoe suggested, just have a beer and enjoy the ride.
