Just ever want to walk away from patch ? Lost a 2106 Schmit this week to two big splits in the stem that went all the way into cavity , fast forward Friday aft to a 1474 Clementz at 273 OTT with a split starting to form in cavity already 😓, any suggestions on what causes this to happen and can it be prevented / or can the kin be saved ??? FYI they both had plenty of slack and elevation on their stems also 😞

We have all been there. June 30, 2014 a flash flood hit my garden, left me with one twisted up plant. I got a pumpkin to set, nursed it through a stem split. It quit growing 2 weeks before the weigh off. When we lifted it the day before the weigh off the bottom fell out, a mouse had eaten into it. Sometimes its beyond your control. All you can do is try again the next year.

Stick with it Gusto! If this season is over, start preparing for next :)
Look at the wound I limped to the finish line last year! Better safe than sorry, if you're worried about losing it, cut 1/3 of the plant away. This will slow while healing, and not push as hard when it picks back up. If it continues to split, cut some more off until splits are able to heal as they form.
Losing pounds per day is way better than losing the whole thing. If you think it's gonna go, either start pruning, or change that apprehension to belief and hope for the best.

Experience is the best teacher Gusto, and perseverance is what makes champions. We have lost way more pumpkins along the way than we ever brought to the scale.
Good luck along your journey,

Im guessing the cold weather Tom, You will need to spilt the stem with a knife to take pressure off the pumpkin to keep from kin from spilting open. I will stop by after work I had to do this with the 2106 last year.

An update from the patch, i'll never give this addicting hobby up, been growing veggies for 45 years, I just had to walk away from patch for awhile after seeing the kin splits, but anyway mobymike stopped over and showed me how to perform a minor surgical procedure o the stem and so far so good, still gaining bout 33 lbs a day and split is holding its own. taking it day by day, thks Mike and all others for ur advice and/or encouragement.
