In the past I would notice my older leaves closer to the stump die off and eventually lose much of the leaves by September. I've been working on the premise this was vine borer and this year have been more aggressive with the pesticide. Any ideas if it was something other than this?

Could be squash bugs if the leaves turn yellow to brown then die off.

Old age. The leaves only last just so long, get brittle and dry up. The first leaves to grow are the first to die. If younger leaves start dying off, then you have a problem.

Right, sometimes it's just age and over spraying thinking your helping the plant. Then a simple misdiagnoses makes you want to spray more and they age faster. By September I'm always letting terts fill in bad areas. Growing outside takes a toll on the plant no matter where you live and up by the stump are the first to show it.

Not saying it isn't a pest like mites, borers etc... Just have to figure it out first before you nuke the plant.

Old leaves dying near the stump by September is normal, they are old. Circle of life, bet the newest leaves look great.

Thanks for the reassurances. I'll take pics this year if it seems beyond what you've told me.

do any of you all trim these leaves off? I have this same issue wth the first handful of leaves that grew. the rest st of the vine looks perfect. can I just lop them off at the main and apply captan?

If they are dieing and not contributing to the plant , yes cut them off and dust with captan. You don't want problems. You can let tertiary, 3rd growth start up in Sept. I do.
