I screwed up this morning trying to reposition my backup pumpkin.I only wanted to move it an inch or two but as soon as I touched it it snapped off at the stem. Should I have waited until the heat of the day?

Probably. But some times its gonna snap no matter what. Lesson learned the hard way. But at least it was your. Back up.

Did you really try to reposition the pumpkin (the pumpkin only)? Better leave the pumpkin as it is (means the angle between stem and first part of the vine) but reposition the vine (creating an S-curve). Anyway, S-curves should also be created in the heat of the day (afternoon) only.

I've learned that the earlier you start positioning your vines, the easier they are to work with. I start the S curve when the pumpkin is at the tip now so that as Pumping mentioned, there isn't much moving the pumpkin other than forward as it swells. If I do move the pumpkin itself, it is only about 1/2" per day, not the 1-2" you went for. Better to take twice as long with it than have accidents. Good luck with your main fruit!

Thanks for your replies. It's been about 15 years since I tried to grow a bigun' so I guess I forgot a few things!! Note to self (Carve S into pumpkin) LOL!

Or is that S curve in vine?

I use a small loose not stiff bungee cord or rubber bands. I attach one end to the blossom end and the other to a stake. I use slight tension on the kin, every day in the afternoon when it's warm I put more tension on it again because it has moved the kin over a little over a 24 hr period. Once it's where I want it I remove the bungee. Caution, don't apply to much tension. Depending on how far it has to be moved it can take a few days or more.

Definitely don't move them in the morning. There moved easily midday when its warm and the plant is flagging a little.I like to let the pumpkin get about two weeks old before I move them.Every one is different with stem length vine flexibility so its a learning process-The shorter the stem the bigger of a bend you need.
