Just wanted to share... A woven nylon line worked great for me last year. I crimp the line to make a mark in the line then lay the line along a tape measure.
The old bends remain visible even when the line is straightened out.
A great way to see the progress of the pumpkin is to leave the line around the pumpkin and mark the circumference in the line every day like I said by simply crimping the line.

I have used a 100' flexible plastic tape measure from Menards and it works great. I will use it this year to measure my giant squashes.
