My 1st and 2nd females both aborted at 16 and 19 ft. My next one isn't till 25 feet. I know it's way far out of the golden zone, but what are the negatives about growing this far out, I obviously don't have any choice. Thanks.

Daletas doesn't even think about pollinating before 20 feet. Go for it and hang on!

The bigger the plant before the female, the bigger the fruit.

Christopher if that was true wouldn't more people set kins at 25+ feet and not 12-18?

I have seen plants that had a pumpkin split or go down to some other at around 400# a couple times, then pollinated one around late July or early August. They had too much plant pushing them and blew apart before reaching basketball size.

I grew an 1108 pound pumpkin that was set at 22 feet. At the time it was my personal best. It can be done.

Mikkal, did you do anything to compensate for long set...ie terminate some secondaries? Peace, Wayne

I always remove first five to seven side vines to take pressure off the stump. As far a golden zone i dont believe in it. As long as past seven feet i will go with first one that takes, even if that is at 30 feet. Just go with what you get and itll be fine.

The larger the food factory is before the fruit, the more food and water can available to help the fruit to grow and for the plant itself to handle such a very large fruit.
