In 2013 I was able to cut 3 different pkns off on their respective secondaries they were pollinated on around DAP 15-20. All 3 grew to from 200-300 pounds and fully matured on just 8-12 feet of vine alone.
Has anyone else done this or was that an anomaly? If you'd ask me if a pkn would mature on 10 feet of vine for 70 days I'd say no had it not been for 2013.
I am thinking about doing this again for my backup that is on a side vine, but am also just debating cutting it so I don't lose one secondary. I seem to have splits on my keepers every year so a small backup for the kids might be the way to go if it can be done again.

I tried it once. It was doing OK until a flood wiped out the patch. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=119357

Years ago Bodene did this on a side vine pumpkin he just grew for genetics. I think it is a great idea.

Love this idea. So u can sacrifice one secondary and still get a pumpkin to sell or for seeds. Very cool! Thanks for the idea I am interested in giving it a try.
