I believe it was Cecil who talked about not terminating the first side vines to help with foaming stump issues.
Has anybody tried this and what were the results? I've had a foaming stump before and I'd like to avoid this if I can.

I chop them off when they get to the end of the patch

I have issues with foaming stumps also. I pull off 3 to 4 on each side. Still not sure if it helps or not. Depends alot on timing of pollination.

My plant seems very healthy this year but like you said rick timing seems to be a big deal. I will probably let the sides 3 or 4 feet past the edge and then when i'm sure the pollination has taken i'll cut them back.
