I wouldn't be so quick to give up on a kinked vine like you show in your post. I know it isn't pretty but the vine is still all in tack and will grow just as good.

I'm really worried that there wouldn't be as much water or nutrients going through a kinked vine

I'd go with it-youll be pleasantly surprised how well the plant will grow

I had this happen to me before and it never slowed the main down at all. It had a crack down each side that healed up nice. It's when you get a crack across the vine that will cut off flow and slow things down

My 1944.5 grew on a vine that was kinked about 18" out from the stump.

Pot growers kink the stems on all their plants. It's been shown to push more nutrients through these areas. It seems the opposite of what we think will happen, happens. My thinking would be it would hold back moisture and nutrients but in fact increases in these areas.
Like already said above, I'd think twice.

I've really thought about it with my pumpkins but haven't done this.
Q, I was at Eric Olsens from NPK's house yesterday and he does it with all his plants.:) What a difference!

I agree with keeping the plant. I had a pretty good p-kin last year that was grown on a kinked vine. So. Cal., thanks for the info on the pot growers. I have another kinked main this year. I did all I could to keep the kink out of it, but it just appeared once again. Could the kink be genetic related? The seed I'm growing this year came from the kinked plant from last year. Makes me wonder. Anyway, good post and good responses.

Maybe the fellow that advocated running over the vines with a tractor had a point. Athough I'm not willing to go that far LOL.

My 1805.5 grew from a kinked main vine last year. It will be just fine. As the main grows in diameter, it may even push the kink out some.

This might be a terrible analogy, but think of bending your arm 90 degrees. Blood still flows and very functional just like the vascular system to the main vine on you pkn plant.

your arm was designed to bend, if I keep mine bent to long it goes numb(maybe I need to see the Doc), a garden hose doesn't work well with a kink in it either

Good point on arms are designed to bend, hence the disclaimer. But, a garden hose is a bad analogy too since the vascular system of pkn plants is through multiple channels on the perimeter like an arm where a hose is 1 channel in the middle.
All I'm saying is don't pull the plant due to a little kink.

Just so you all know, Q and I have been in contact and both kinked all our main vines and secondaries.
Wish us luck.

OMG, this seems to be turning into a site for those who want to compete with the kinks associated with their main vines, LOL

Wayne,
I had to think it over a bit. I think it may have been Giant Jack. He're a link where he aludes to it:
