Hello. As you know if you've been reading my diary, my 1980 plant is not doing so good. It has a massive split in it going with the stem so that's good but the split is getting bigger and it's already huge I honestly don't think it will last the season. It is also slow growing . Take a look in my diary. I was thinking of taking that plant out and starting backups of the 1713 Lancaster which I've started backups already just today. My question is if I plant the 1713 around mid June which would be the time it would be if I decide to take the 1980 out . My question is how long would it take to get a pumpkin from planting the plant in around June 15? The weighiff I would be taking it to is on October 8. And what is the max pounds I could get out of it?
Thanks

Henry...don't lose faith in what you can do, but general thoughts as I have read them over the years say that 60 days of plant growth, then 90 days of fruit growth!!! Nobody guaranteed you a rose garden!!! Go out & work & do your best, and lot's o folks will be proud!!!! Peace, Wayne

I have heard the same numbers as Wayne stated for growth. This is a picture from a split few years ago and It got to 1280 lbs. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=223003 I think you can get a kin with a real late start but it will be smaller. Good Luck!

If I catch them early enough I wrap them in gauze and build a cover to keep out dirt, bugs and water.

Henry I think you will be OK with your split. Just keep doing the right things. It is a long season.

How about how long is it from when a female develops to when it is ready to be pollinated?

99, it's not so much about how long it takes...it's about observation. The night b/4 a female will be ready to be pollinated, the blossom will pucker at the top, show a lil bit of orange. The next day is pollination day! Cover it that night, if controlled pollination is wanted!! Also cover or cut & bring inside male blossoms showing the same characteristics as the female...full blossoms showing signs of being "ready"! & if then get ready...early, early in the a.m.!!! Pkn sx!!! Peace, Wayne

Thanks Wayne, familiar with the pollination process. Had to be gone this weekend so was trying to gauge whether I needed to find some backup coverage if it was going to open when I was gone. Looks like it will be a couple more days.

lunker, if you were gone while it opened, it a done deal...open pollination! Glad to hear you are back home & can do it right!! Peace, Wayne PS...I don't have a good feel for 3 or 4 days away type of judgement, but I can tell the night b/4!!! Good luck & Grow em BIG!!
