The deadline for the 150 contest closes on April 15th of every year. Make plans for next year. You can always make this a practice year.

I am just a contestant not an organizer but i think the deadline might be so it can be organized more efficiently. There is the collection of entry fees. Sending out emails to the growers participating, keeping track of the required diary entries etc. Watching over this contest takes a lot of time. Taking away a deadline for entry makes it much harder.

The entry fee is minimal...$2 but you have to mail it. I think that it is just enough so most entrants are somewhat serious about growing for it. From what I hear is every year their are some growers that say that they want to participate in the 150 contest but won't take the time to mail such a small entry fee. As the contest is now, i think it is a lot fun and have to thank FlatNorm for taking the effort to keep it going.

Thank you bnot, your spot on. This isn't the largest contest in the pumpkin world but it does have special rules to maintain the fun for all. It takes a lot of time to keep up with the 'paperwork' and we would all like to spend that time in the patch. It makes it more manageable if its completed early. The high entry fee allows everyone to have some skin in the game. The entire pool of entry fees is apportioned to the top three winners each year. Flatnorm absorbs all the overhead expense himself. The prize pool actually exceeds the sum of the required entry fees because some participants insist on donating more and some winners have rolled their award over into the following years pool.
