A split going length wise won't hurt the stem, with it being so close to the stump now you have the added challenge of keeping it dry all year, from the look of your leaves it probably split length wise like that because something in your soil is probably quite a bit high or you fertilized with to strong of a drench, from my experience high doses of potassium mixed with excessive water cause the stem to split like that. But you can never be certain with out a tissue test.

Agreed, my first leaf or two this year looked that way from too rich of a potting mix. You might also want to vent better during the day if it's going over 100 degrees in there, that's not so good either. And any water laying in that stem split will make it rot at any point this year but keep it dry and everything could still turn out fine so I wouldn't give up on it
