I posted 3 pics in my diary, this plant came up with 3 cots. It appears to be starting to ribbon with the 2nd & 3rd leaves. Can I cut off 1 leaf now to stop it from becoming a ribbon vine? This plant also is splitting the main already, how can I stop that?

If you want to grow it let it keep going till you get a strong secondary bud then terminate the growth tip. Youll have enough leaves for the plant to develop and it will put its energy into the secondary buds. Grow the strongest as your main.

With that many issues, and only being May 1st, I'd go with a back up.
By splitting, if you mean doubling, I do recall doubles can be heavily watered and pull out of it, but I personally had no luck with that.

OK new growers. A ribbon vine is flat and continues to flatten, looks like a computer wire ribbon. Typically the plant is a headache, and you should call a friend to put it out of its misery. Now a double vine is another story. They can be contained, pruned, and the plant will recover. I agree it is May 1st start a back up, and plant both. Choose a month from now.

Flat Vine- Flat, multiple segments, curls around like it does not know what end is up.

I have 5 seeds started and room for 3 plants, so I have backups. If it wasn't a 2008 Neptune I probably would have already culled it. I will post a pic of the split tomorrow, it looks like it is literally splitting open.

Wouldn't worry about that, as long as the vascular system is not compromised it will not hurt the plant. I have had the wind split the, wide open.

Agree with Linus, that's not a bad split, just superficial. I thought you meant splitting as in doubling, I have had no luck with those... you get 2 of everything.

Your plant looks normal to me. Here is what a flat vine looks like. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=85297

I think we need to clarify more for new growers. I believe they are Double, Flat, and Ribbon Vines. Flat and Ribbon are major problems. This early in the season Pull a Flat or Ribbon, this is what you have back ups for. Later in the season you can fix a double by pruning and watering. A flat or ribbon I hope you have a good secondary to train as your main.
