You can see my plant problem in this diary entry, where could I get both tests done for a good price, and what kind of virus test do you ask for. There are different Mosaic viruses I believe.

Herbicide.. I would throw some radish seeds in the dirt. The chemical test has to be specific, and can get costly

Western labs does 4 to 6 diseases for $168 and 7 to 9 for $200. I would call first to see exactly what part of plant they need. Or go to there website.

when i saw that diary picture, the first thought that popped into my mind is it is similar to the herbicide damage i experienced last year. Since it is four plants, all affected, I am thinking that might be a possibility.

Do what Rick says and call western labs. Ask for Harry and he'll walk you through what you need to do. Last time I had disease looking plants he just told me to cut a leaf, drop it in a paper bag and mail it to him. 3 days later he called and I knew what I was up against. No charge either!
Good group of guys and gals over there.

Your soil looks absolutely dried out. You mention Azos twice is there too much of it. Are these the same plants, you were measuring the roots. Keep us advised of the problem. TKS JIM

No the soil is wet right below the surface, and has beeen been flushed twice since the photo was taken .Here is some info i sent to Matt for those that are curious.I will contact Western and the local extension office

On the same day I filed and soaked seeds in root keeper those seeds, are
2261.5 Wallace 1756.5 Howell 2063 Willemijns 2252 Paton I planted them in Pro-mix. I had azos, pumpkin pro, and companion in the mix.Germed at 85F and when the soil cracked I set them outside in the sun. They spent most of their daylight hours outside. Transplanted all but the 2261 wallace on day 8, the Wallace sprouted 3 days after the other seeds and was going to be a backup.

The soil has kelp meal and dry molasses, the planting hole had azo and pumpkin-pro added to it. They were watered in and the soil is wet just below the surface. Hoop house has been 65F to 85F and soil temps 75F, pictures are around 3 or4 days after being planted. His second response

There is no “cheap” virus test other than Tobacco mosaic which my state extension service will do for free. It may be worth a call if you have an area extension agent as they will sometimes perform tests for free because they want to know if some viruses are in the area. I like your idea with increasing the amount of potting soil because my guess is herbicide #1 and if not this then soil born is my #2 diagnosis. I know you said you had something similar years back and the plant grew out of it so that is in your favor that it is not virus.

If I can help in any other way let me know.

After his first look at the photos
My first reaction was that it looks like virus to me, but it could be some form of toxicity in your soil. Nothing that you mentioned (and also thanks for the information and details) seems out of the ordinary or would cause this to occur. My only guess would be high salts or a Ca issue. The fact that you are seeing it on multiple seedlings is odd and leads me to look at a potential soil issue. Calcium can cause odd looks to the leaves as well as residual 2,4D, so is there any chance this was sprayed on the area or did you bring in any compost/soil that may have had grass clippings as a base source material?

Just considering all potential options.

If not herbicide, there are other compounds that could have a similar effect. I'm thinking along the lines of brand new plastics offgassing, or something in the air. Maybe even herbicide from last year being trapped in the hoops?

I think the plants are recovering I have a new pic in the diary http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=271569

Andy -I was reusing the plastic from last year and only used roundup in a few small spots since summer of last year

My guess is herbicide damage.Looks like mosaic but doesn't make sense that all four young plants would exhibit mosaic this early at the same time.

If the new growth is looking better its not mosaic.Mosaic shows up on the new growth worse as the virus replicates in the fast growing leaves.
