I've never planted 2 in 1 spot to compete who eventually gets the area, but know many on here do it every year. Anyone who does this, please share your input on distance apart, culling and timing. I have 2 seeds I can't decide against and want the plants to decide.
Thanks

My hoops are 8x8. I like my first choice centered at 1/3 from the back of the hoop and my second choice centered just past half way to the front of the hoop.

I like to hold onto the back-up plants as long as I can. 5-6 feet and then I pull the cold frames off and make my cut.
Spacing is only 16" or so apart.

About a foot or so apart for me. Usually doubles of the same seed so I don't second guess myself on the seed choice. Cull about the same stage as Ryan, maybe a little earlier, but after laying down just in case there are issues or breaks with one in the process.

I will have three pits in 450 sf and put 2 plants in each pit. 16" apart sounds like good spacing to me in the pits. Ultimately I will likely only grow out 1 plant; maybe two depending on how things go. I would like to grow out a second at least until it flowers and I can use it as the male pollinator. then yank it. Maybe. :D

Thanks for the replies, just what I wanted to hear. I'm only growing 1 plant and want to avoid a double, ribbon vine etc and pick the healthiest.
I remember a conversation on here in the past, but is general consensus to cut flush at the surface when choosing?
Thanks

Yes, I would not want to disturb the roots, they will act as fertilizer for the kept plant.
