Largest indoor grow(cant be in a green house) Basement or grow room. Maybe a $500 1st prize. I think this would be cool & help us stop CABIN FEVER in the north. The southerners could join in to even if they dont have a basement they could use there garage with grow lights.
Who who sign up free contest just for laughs & giggles We can post on our diarys & facebook either one will document the grow. Great learning tool.Whos interested for a Decmber or January(2018)start up??

I think I could grow a reasonable pumpkin in my basement. Last count I had 5000 watts of grow light available that would light up my 120 sq ft grow area nicely. Three problems though. Electricity of all the lights for the 6 months it would take a pumpkin to grow would cost $1350 . 2nd problem ..i have grown over 700 pounds outdoors in 150 sq ft. It is not unreasonable to think 500 pounds would be possible in 120 sq ft in a basement. It is questionable that it would fit in my stairwell much less trying to figure out how to get it up the stairs and would the stairs support the weight. 3rd problem..will be busy trying to grow the world record indoor tomato at that time.

Ok there are a lot of different ways to do this.I think 500lbs is not possible as a basement plant wont have the root system of a outside plant. Butt not looking to argue the idea. You can weigh the pumpkin in the basement. Bring scale to basement.Must think outside of the box on these new craZZy contests.lol If you grow a 500 lber in your basement I will bring a certified scale to your house & video tape the entire thing. Yes I have a chain fall to.lol
This is just for growers who think its a cool idea and want to do it.Remember most of the leafs wont have a 12 inch root in soil to give the fruit huge growth.
I may also do a indoor basement/garage mater contest also.
If your interested in either contest. Please post below. If not interested please don't post. I will do the contest either way. who would like to challenge me & join in the fun? My electric bill will be 100$ a month on a 50 square foot plant.

Ok, I am very interested in this. I am guessing that these plants would be grown in large pots right?

Ok, I am in for it! But how do you get the vine to keep growing instead of the vine just stopping on you ?

Basement plants could have just as much root area as outdoor. To get a twelve inch base in 120 sq ft would take 900 gallons of soil. I just finished hauling 500 gallons of premium potting soil outside. That could certainly come back inside. Would take only 400 gallons more for the 12 inches. I figured my electric bill at 5000 watts (40 watts per sq foot) x 15 hours per day=75kW per day at $0.10 per kW is $7.50 per day x 6 months. 500 pounds is possible, especially is the fruit is growing out of the root area. In that case it is more like a 150 sq ft plant. With hydro might be able to get even bigger. I can grow a hydro tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket to equal size of a 15 gallon soil tomato. Growing a basement pumpkin is probably something that I probably will not pursue but will see what I feel like when the time comes. If I should get a big enough early winter tomato then maybe.

I'd be interested. Any limits on lights, fans, misters, cubic yards of soil?

the real benefit here guys is if we can make crosses with the top pumpkins from the previous year, so if two growers close enough or 1 grower with 2 plants can make some great crosses, imagine we could be planting 2307x2624 and 2624x2307 this spring, and Matt D had done this in the past, it would be nice to keep trying to move genetics ahead faster

Good idea mobymike...! Does being friends with New Zealand or Australian growers also make this possible?...
No question you could take plant material from the two best plants available from that year and by late spring have seeds that could be worth $50 ea x 200 seeds = $10000? Seems like that would a lot of lumens...

Great ideas Lets do it next December 1st We can have some rules. We should start early if trying to make new crosses.500$ 1st place prize & a bronze membership at WWGG.Must be grown in a pot.No dirt floors.lol Want to keep it somewhat even playing field. You can root each leaf if you wish. must be separate container for each leaf?? You guys that want to do this we can have a meeting of the minds on the rules. Im flexible but wont cater to the 1 person mindset. Whats best for the group? wins over in the Bubba world.

lol I think there will be a pot size limit maybe 15 gallon. We will vote on it before I set guidelines. You can use a grow room.No green houses or outside light influence.Sounds good Big City Grower

Somebody will build a box that is 10 Feet by 10 feet & fill it 2 feet high with soil.lol Wouldn't it be better to see it on a more even keel?? Just asking? If the growers involved vote no size limit then Im in? But I must warn you I have a walkout basement I could wheelbarrow a lot of dirt in here in a few hours.

what only 10 x 10...my basement family room is 15x20. I am sure there might be a few growers that have a full unfinished basement to work with. They could grow full size plants.I think the limiting factor for basement grows is not size but number of lights available. 30,000 watts of light should be enough to break 1k or better in the basement. That would be one expensive pumpkin. I am using 30,000 as a reference if using metal halide/hps. Other forms of grow lights would have different wattage requirements. Unlimited competition sounds more interesting to me then putting lots of rules on it. I wont be competing but will be watching the results.

An unregulated competition might have some bigger pumpkins at the end, but a limited competition would be more interesting in my opinion. Weights being close is exciting and little choices become more important.

If things are unregulated the person who has the most $ to dump into the setup will likely win.

Lol... my basement is about 2200 sq ft give or take I also have a way to bring in ars loads of soilless media.. but I won't ... I only would use my 10 x 12 room.... it has no heat signature from above....and limited power supply so no high powered lights only t 5 vho light hoods... my concern is how do we get big pumpkins out of a basement with out cutting them up or taking some of my windows out to get it out..

Looks like we would be about even competition Gary. I have 120 sq ft also. How big do you think you could get in 120 sq ft in the basement. I have some money invested in my indoor grow room...but way less than the outdoor greenhouse growers. 15 gallon pots is for tomatoes...

Hmm I would think depending on how exact I would run and what media I would use I think 300 plus if I did it I would do it for a cross like Matt has done... the room is still being put together and assembled and painted.. etc.. I had a mental date of 4/1 as complete but I guess April fools on me.. once it's done I'll post some pictures I have a new iphone that I kinda dislike but the colors I used will sure be unique fo sho.....
