I am going to buy a new tiller this weekend. Any advice on brands and size of the tiller? I'm willing to spend $500. Planning on going to Menards or Bomgars. Thanks!

Try Craigslist first, but I have a Craftsman that I've never had a problem with. Works great, even on virgin ground (You just have to go a little slower). I believe Troy bilt makes Craftsman tillers

gotta be a rear tine tiller for sure. front tine will not do a darn thing but cause you more work and a terrible result ------ front tine sucks. rear tine is the way to go
i agree look on craigs list for used first. if ya need to go new then any rear tine 5 hp or above will get the job done.
we have a 5 hp rear tine thats 40 plus years young. we no longer use it but troy built will last forever if you take care of it. they are pricey though.
check home depot - lowes - or tractor supply as well.lots of sales this time of year.

I have a husqvarna rear tine.. in the several years I have had it.. I have beat the snot out of it.. does a great job... look for one with dual rotational tines.... that will help a lot when you want nice fluffy soil..

If buying new, check out end of season closeouts at the big box stores as the end of season price is significantly discounted. Maybe call down to Menards in Ft Dodge

Just rebuilt my troybilt horse from 1970- total cost of rebuild 150, and it will likely be good for near another 50 years
I bought a troybilt super bronco CRT mid last season to get me by tilling ahead of the plant when I slung a crankshaft in 46 year old motor just say no to crtCRT that was the worst thing ever although it will get the job done.
I helped a local grower find a tiller and he ran across a ppower mate(home depot sells for 399?) And it does suprisingly well being crt but I won't ever swap from troybilt horse as enjoy tilling and walking beside tiller eating a bag of chips
the newer cub cadet and husqavarna are on the short list of work good, neighbor lady has one other down the road lady has the other and do well its still no older troybilt
on another note if anyone has a troybilt horse running or even motor blown let me know if you want to get rid of it(Sglasgow@uab.edu) (I have a welder and want to make an oversized deep tine something to potentially chop my toes off with so please help in my locating of a good toe chopper

Check craigslist for the old school Troybilts with a cast iron engine. With a little care they last forever
