An fyi : based on dissection I have observed that the number of sepals corresponds to the number of ribs in the fruit. The number of stigma lobes correspond to the number of ovaries. The number of sepals x 2 is the number of ribs... usually 5 x 2 = 10. Hope this helps you choose a monster. . . More ribs might mean a thinner blossom end though.

very interesting glenomkins,

certainly another good piece of information people can use in their quest for a big pumpkin.

we grow and make our seed selections based on genetic history of each chosen seed.
in other words we know going in that the seeds we select have what it takes to produce the results we are seeking---its now up to us to get everything out of that seed/plant/pumpkin, to achieve those results.

i dont advise growing unproven seeds (regardless of sepals) and definately dont consider planting seeds that have a history of weighting under chart or deformed and/or weak blossom (crooked blossoms can most times become a problem as the pumpkin gains weight. stay away from crooked blossoms)

i do favor the idea of (wider) ribs and for that reason your post regarding counting of flower sepals is certainly worth investigating.

Pap what is the advantage to the wider ribs? Fewer places to split? More weight?

I would gladly grow the 1872 Wallace even though it was light to the chart... :)

A crooked blossom meaning one where the stigma is bent or where the fruit is lopsided?

Thanks for the helpful reply!!!

yes holloway fewer ribs means if you do get a sag line (dill ring)less places to blow a hole.

more important though?
also all those indentations where the ribs develop is just empty space and empty space weights nothing.verses
wide ribs that are all meat.

glen ---- any crooked blossoms we have encountered over the years were evident from football size on.
id guess its stigma because the fruit were to young to not be in pretty good shape.in the end its a defect and any and all defects can and will cause problems at any time during the growth cycle---stay away from growing them.
